Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I shouldn't be feeling like this

I've been here for nearly two decades. Instead of feeling secure, I'm terrified every single day. The longer you've been at Verizon, the more likely you are to be on the list. How is it possible that experience is a liability? I thought loyalty mattered. Now I know it doesn't.

@ps giving the best deal possible by funding it with slashing OpeEx and later selling off parts of the business, then be taken over by other company

Meanwhile Verizon is burning cash on dividends and debt service

Verizon has negative growth and things like Simplicity make it worse. Proudly brought to you by washed out wannabe cowboy and village platypus, the strategic masterminds

@pp your neighbor would have jumped to a competitor if they could offer that price. Happiness doesn’t mean loyalty, customers follow the money. Verizon will improve customer retention by giving the best deal possible.

It's true that Layoffs have been going on for years. But now we have layoffs every couple of months, we have a CEO that has no plan, other carriers have gone up on pricing, Verizon has lowered their prices to $30 per line. My neighbor was paying $70 for a Verizon single wireless line and they were happy, recently they switched to the Simplicity plan and is now paying $30, Verizon is now making $40 less for the same customer account. Id--ts.

A lot of folks letting themselves be overtaken by fear. Wireline has been doing RIFs every year for 20 years for the non-union workforce. Wireless for at least the last 10. It happened with Ivan. It happened with Lowell. It happened with Hans. It is happening with Dan. I've been with this company for decades and it's been a fact of life through Bell Atlantic, GTE, XO, Alltel, Tracfone, the telematics companies, Yahoo, AOL, etc. The only real change was it slowed some during those COVID years because Christy fought against the optics of doing layoffs during the pandemic and got bounced out by Hans. Get a grip already. You have work at Verizon until either you decide to leave or they decide they don't need you anymore. It's been that way your entire career. It's that way at Motorola, Cisco, Google, Meta, AT&T, etc. No one has said "welcome to the phone company, you have a job for life" since the 1980s. You know what you will do if you get RIFed? The sun will rise the next morning and you will dust yourself off and find another job. So why sit and stress yourselves out over something you cannot control?

You're just another statistic or line item. There's no loyalty when it comes to corporations.

@c0 Sounds like you had a Network posistion? It sounds a lot like my experience but I left on my own terms feeling one day my number was coming up. It was just time.

@cc even before that. This company went to sh^t when they bought out Vodaphone and tried to merge wireless and wireline, which had two completely different cultures. Add in the MCI and GTE mergers and you can see where I'm going with this. 1998 was probably the last good year this company had, employee wise.

@cc actually the date of that big RIF / restructure was 10/29/15. It was an ugly day.

I will never forgot that webcast where he said "we are doing this for millenials."

100% agree that we've never recovered from it and the chaos has been constant since then.

@b3 last 2 years? You must be new. It’s been like this since John Stratton gave his famous all hands, preceded by the first major layoff. It’s not ended since then. That was in 2016. It’s a lifestyle here.

@c0 sounds like you never learned work/life balance. Unfortunately most of what you wrote is actually your fault. You chose to sacrifice your personal life. I’ve always (almost 20 yrs in) said no if it was unreasonable. I never work more than what I’m being paid for. V doesn’t give a sh-t about any of us, never has; they only care about the stock price. Sorry you are dealing with such anxiety. At the end of the day it’s just a job. F EM

You are 100% correct loyalty does not matter at all. I found this out for sure. I knew this awhile back but I kept charging ahead hoping for the best. I was dedicated and tried to do all the right things. I genuinely liked my job and thought maybe just maybe I could retire on my terms but those days are so long gone now. I was always available after hours and many times I didn't claim that time that I was owed. I thought well sometimes it's give and take. My computer was always on and did work on it alot of times after hours. Work just followed me home sometimes because of my role. I got all my work done on time and ahead of time. I helped other people out. Always tried to make our group stand out as one of the best and we were. Always had good reviews like that matters anyway. I never was confrontational I just did my job effectively and efficiently and never complained. I was self sufficient and didn't need my hand held. There is probably alot more I could say but you get the gist of it. None of this mattered in the end. So just remember this no matter what job or title you have. You are a number and easily dispensable.

I think it’s clear that Verizon is no longer filling positions based on best in breed. They are outsourcing many jobs to other countries & I have noticed the talent pool in the U.S. & outside is very limited.

You can only control what you can and at the end of the day its just a job. Upskill yourself for the possibility of the unlikely event that you do get the boot or better yet start applying now. Its rough out there and it feels like cuts are driven by firms that look at Verizon from the outside instead of decisions made internally

Anyone that actually cares about Verizon and is loyal to the company is just an id--t after seeing what has happened the last 2 years.

@OP you need to change your perspective. Be loyal and kind to yourself, your family and friends, not to your toxic, chaotic, and psychopathic employer. Execs are only serving their best selfish interests, mostly financial, and you are just an expendable figure in the balance books. What they are telling to the employees is mostly wishful thinking, deceit and worthless word salad.

You absolutely need to disassociate your self-worth from Verizon. If you want to stay with Verizon for any reasons, that's fine, you don't need to explain yourself to anybody. But there is no bright future at Verizon for the vast majority of employees, so keep that in mind and do the minimum and keep your energy for things that actually have purpose in life. This job doesn't.
