Thread regarding CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield layoffs

Migration and VSP

I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling this way but it was a huge mistake to do the VSP in the middle of a system migration. Every single day I am dealing with migration issues, I cannot get my ‘regular’ work done, and clients are losing patience…understandably so. I don’t get the feeling that this is going to be over anytime soon.

CareFirst leadership was not focused on long-term savings when it offered the VSP. Rather, it was a strategy for achieving immediate cost reductions by encouraging higher-paid employees to leave, which the organization needed at the time. It also had the effect of reducing the number of employees who were nearing retirement age, a demographic that leadership viewed as disproportionately represented in the workforce. AC would probably confirm this if someone raised the question since it was all over the ELT documents that multiple people had access to when they were discussing the roll out.

Leadership was NOT concerned about the increased workload and strain placed on the employees who remained. They most likely hoped additional employees would resign, as those positions could then be filled with lower-paid workers, further reducing labor costs.

@f9 hasn’t changed. I hear about more re-orgs in the future with additional layoffs and that’s scary. We were already short staffed and underpaid. The VSP was just as much a failure as the push to continue migrations before things were solid. I cannot fathom what would happen if the same leadership was responsible for rebuilding the bridge. Same theory…longer they pretend all is well the more it will cost to fix. I’m not sure how other area are but in mine, leadership is good at talking and demanding but have zero clue what they’re saying.

I was someone that took the VSP. It was not what I wanted but I was afraid if I didn’t I would be laid off later. The working conditions had become unbearable, working 12-14 hour days, being constantly told to do more with less. Quantity became much more important than quality. I hope someone has to answer for what has become of the company but somehow I doubt it.

At some point, someone will need to answer for this. Was any consideration given to the difficulty in addressing challenges that existed PRE-VSP, in a POST-VSP environment with lower staffing levels and a learning curve?
