Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Management Layers

Let’s use this thread to discuss how many layers of management are between you and the CEO. Then also mention how many direct reports each manager has.

I will start. There are 7 layers of management between me and the CEO. My manager has 3-4 direct reports. His boss has 3 direct reports. His bosses boss has 2-3 direct reports. His bosses bosses boss has 2 direct reports. Above that guy? 3-4 reports again. If we use simple Graph Theory with rooted trees, and stochastic branching processes. We can extrapolate that no level of management is doing much. If you cannot understand what I’m talking about. Well that will tell you where this company is going.

@b3 I know here in GRE ops we have several managers with only one or two direct reports. It’s a waste

Fat in the belly is being denied by the upper body strength. It is like overnourished human in the wrong places.

They need to get rid of management people who forward escalation emails 3 to 4 hours, sometimes 6 to 8 hours after a customer emails them directly.

When I started in 2015, there were 4 people between me and Lowell. I used to joke with me wife I'd be CEO any day now. When I was laid off in 2025, there were 7.

There would be 2 phases. In phase 1 the layers will be kept for certain time, maybe 2Qs, the teams <10 people including the team's manager will be merged, managers (SrMgr, AD, Dir, SD, AVP) who can not get a manager role after the merge need go back to the IC track if they can find internal IC roles or take the package and leave. After things are stablized phase 2 is to cut the layers, eventually there will only layers of Dir, VP, EVP, each has at least 15 direct reports, no layers of SrMgr/AD/SD/AVP.

Get rid of managers & directors. A supervisor reporting directly to a VP is a great way to cut the red tape.

@b0 merging with mci gave Verizon a global fiber optic network. Without it Verizon would be stuck with their tiny footprint in the northeast and mid-Atlantic

Too many managers with single digit direct reports. 2-4 direct reports at each level is nonsense. Micromanagement at its finest. The push for AI makes sense now. Claude can manage 2-4 direct reports.

Honest opinion. This company is run like cr-p. I’d fire 3/4 of the management team. The stock price reflects what this company is. The last 20 years the stock has done nothing if it was any sort of a decent run company in this economy the stock should at least 4 times what’s its. We all would have golden parachute’s but thru poor investments like buying MCI AOL Yahoo and now Frontier.
