Enron required fraud to destroy its value. Nike appears to be attempting it through PowerPoint decks, executive reshuffles, innovation theater, and a strategy called “Win Now.”
And what a win it has been.
Nike stock: approximately $39.
Lowest level since 2014.
Roughly 78% below its 2021 peak.
But don’t worry—the innovation leadership team probably has another beautifully designed presentation explaining how transformational everything is.
For years, Nike has celebrated process as progress, activity as achievement, and internal storytelling as marketplace impact. Meanwhile, the consumer moved on, competitors gained credibility, and shareholders watched enormous value disappear.
“Win Now” might be the most unintentionally honest corporate slogan ever created:
Leadership keeps winning titles, reorganizations, visibility, and compensation.
Employees win uncertainty and layoffs.
Shareholders win a stock price transported back to 2014.
Real innovation is not measured by prototypes, summits, patents, press releases, executive vocabulary, or how many times someone says “athlete-centered.” It is measured by products consumers urgently want—and business results that prove it.
At some point, “the turnaround is coming” stops being a strategy and becomes corporate fan fiction.
Just Do It?
At $39, perhaps start with: Just Admit It.
