I know everything seems great on paper, so why are we hearing more and more rumors about major layoffs coming before the end of the year? Can anybody with insider knowledge please shed some light on this?

You should treat everyday as your last day. Work hard that day, but at 4:45 you could get the call. Last time I was RIF'ed it was 9AM, and it was great. I took my small box of stuff to the car, made a few calls, and was interviewing the next day.
Lesson learned over 40 years. Do not keep any personal stuff at work. Or at least anything you care about. Be ready to walk out and never return. You were hired to do a job, so do that job but leave it at the door. Tomorrow, if it comes, is a new day. The weekends are yours, use them for yourself. There is no loyalty anymore, by employee or employer. If you make it through the day, the week, the month great. But always be job hunting, knowing who is hiring and may want YOU for the next opportunity.
Layoffs = cost savings = increased executive compensation.
Rinse and repeat until the greedy, bloated ba----ds have had their fill (literally never).
