Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Markets

If you’re considering a role on the Markets side, know what you’re walking into. The culture there isn’t just competitive, it’s dog-eat-dog, and it’s shaped by leadership that’s more interested in protecting itself than developing people. Too many of the “managers” running these teams are underqualified for the seats they hold, and they’ve built environments that reward toxicity because toxicity is what got them there.

Loyalty and tenure mean nothing. Years of contribution mean nothing. If you value a workplace with real accountability from the top down, look elsewhere.

The entire firm seems to operate this way. I agree with others. BNY employs a number of unqualified persons in leadership. These individuals are threatened by anyone above (or below) them that can expose their incompetence. So, they surround themselves with toxic minions.

I was a long time Markets employee and I certainly agree with the OP. That said, doesn’t seem isolated to markets. The entire company is this way under the current C Suite. Is a shame. In my opinion this was a great company to work for up until a few years ago. Reading through some of these posts it sounds like behavior has not changed at all from when I was involuntarily departed in early 2025. Maybe has gotten worse. How much talent can they shed and still remain viable? Doesn’t seem like they care.

can attest to OP's detail.. I worked in markets at BNY for 12yrs, both sell side cap mkts and IM. Everything said is truth.

The issue of there being too many managers, particularly ones that are unqualified to lead the teams they lead while also being vicious backstabbing political operators, is a post P-M feature. I would say it's a bug, but it's throughout BNY so seemingly was desired.

All the Markets people (US & UK) I know are great, but I’m not on their team. Sorry to hear this!
