Genuine question: I joined within the last year and recently interacted with a DE, but honestly didn’t understand much of what they were saying. Do DEs typically write code and have a good understanding of the systems they work with?

Nothing
just a bunch of ba----ds...naothing less nothing more look at that guy AC just posts bunch of batabricks articles and makes noise in forums...and one more DE i know SSnreports to MM cant even speak englishhh :-)
They are supposed to make some good architectural and design decisions for Nike. Instead I saw them bossing around PEs and s-cking up to Databricks to secure their future roles.
They talk to the engineers so the VP’s don’t have to
They gave “architecture review” sessions that no one attends and “design papers” that no one reads
5 years in and I have no clue.
Did you meet AC?
Are you talking about Data Engineers or Distinguished Engineers? Data Engineering is broad and does involve coding and good systems understanding to be successful. Even I don’t understand what distinguished engineers do here other than reposting Databricks articles.
