Data Scientist Role

In the contemporary landscape of Large Language Models (LLMs) and proliferating open-source options, the functional reality of many specialized AI teams has shifted dramatically. What exactly is this role today? Rather than serving as core creators or conducting fundamental research in mathematics or physics, many data scientists operate primarily as system integrators. Their day-to-day operational scope is frequently limited to downloading pre-existing, open-source models from repositories like Hugging Face or Nvidia and deploying them into production environments like AWS. Alternatively, they rely heavily on established agentic frameworks to orchestrate API calls to external LLMs and construct basic operational workflows.

This shift has led many to argue that the "data scientist" title itself has become an operational mismatch, with some suggesting these positions should be renamed to DevOps or Integration Engineers. The criticism stems from a perception that the role has drifted away from true scientific exploration, often resulting in the production of derivative white papers copied from open GitHub repositories or other public sources. With the advent of advanced generative AI and agentic systems, standard software engineering and technology teams are often better equipped to manage, optimize, and scale these integration tasks more efficiently, making the traditional, siloed data science function increasingly redundant.

It's like what swes have been doing for decades is it? I mean look at the fidelity tech stack and our website. Not really a shiny example.of perfection, is it? Most tech is simply vendor integration or, as you point out, built upon open source libraries. We don't see a lot of original work. Everything is built to work with everything else. Who made it like that?

Honestly, this whole role is kinda giving… pointless? Like, most corporate gigs these days, this one’s just getting major “why do we even have this” energy. Nobody can even really measure what these people do, it’s all vibes, no receipts.
They just bounce from project to project, but like, nothing actually happens. No real wins, no tangible stuff you can point to. Across all the BUs, their main job has basically turned into being the bouncers for the internal LLM gateways ,which is just… sad?
And the wild part? They’re not even building anything original. Everything they “deploy” is literally just ripped from open-source, so their big-brain move is just doing a bunch of grindy fine-tuning that doesn’t even make a dent in the end. Zero differentiation energy.
So yeah, nobody in these roles is exactly crushing it or giving main character energy. Tbh, a model like Fable could run circles around them faster, cleaner, way better quality, no cap.

data scienists in fidelity are self certified M.S masters of you know what floating and enjoying have no clue but claim it to be data and AI experts when all they do is use LLM and do the same as production support

Right, because everything is just an LLM now? What we are seeing is rampant cost increases and brittle systems built to duct tape over older brittle systems and this is being done not by data scientists. Its being done by eager SWEs who have no idea about measure theory or counnterfactuals or probabilistic frameworks. Building a probabilistic system that you can bet your job on, is significantly more challenging than s#itposting. Either way, actual modeling was always 10% of the job - and with gen AI its maybe 5% now. You have no idea how data driven businesses work. Thanks for trolling though. I'd venture and say that the traditional SWE role is more easily replaced now than those who straddle in several domains (e.g. data scientists).

75% of the people don't even know what any of this means. Can we get some reliable layoff rumors here? I need something to entertain me while I wait for the hours to pass until 5 pm.
