Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Chem/ChemE PhD Lab techs

Is it a thing here? I work for another corp and recently saw the influx of lab techs with PhDs in Chem/ChemE. I guess that’s why ordinary folks can’t get a job anymore, this and AI / jobs offshoring.

@OP This has been my experience not just at XOM but at a few other companies too:
Some loved to micromanage and hang around the lab, so they’d jump in and do the work themselves. Meanwhile, the person who was supposed to run the experiments either wasn’t doing it correctly or had figured out how to survive without actually performing. The person who was actually competent ended up carrying all the weight.
The worst cases were when someone with zero experimental background was forced into lab work because they didn’t have enough people, or because the folks with real experience preferred desk jobs and used that to bully their way out of hands‑on work.
