Honestly, I'm happy that Nike is doing something about recovery. Recovery is a part of an athletes journey even though, it's not a se-y sell. My initial thought is why Hyperice and not Therabody because Therabody is more premium. Then again, the average joe wouldn't be able to tell you the difference between percussion and vibration therapy so I guess Hyperice for its entry market pricing. I'm also sad that we didn't pursue much with the fuel band as another poster mentioned. This was before the explosion of fitbit, apple watch and oura rings. Yes, I know we aren't a hardware company but Amazon wasn't a cloud computing either. I think we had some good innovation ideas but the money part made us more risk adverse.

@14e Yeah, sure, they aren't selling at all, they are definitely one of the more talked about shoes in a decade, even people who aren't shoe people are coming to me asking about them https://wwd.com/footwear-news/sneaker-news/nike-mind-001-august-restock-1239085218/

@cm Well, that would require basic competence and at least a passing understanding of finance, investment, and business strategy. Do you honestly think anyone at LBJ is doing that? 🤣 They appear to prefer the far more sophisticated model of spending first, asking questions never, and acting shocked when the numbers don’t magically work.

@f4 Just ask the folks at TKG who bought into the whole brilliant idea and were rewarded with a warehouse full of equipment and absolutely no orders. I’m sure they loved that—nothing says “successful business strategy” quite like an expensive collection of industrial paperweights. 💩

@pn Hyperice relies on its authenticity and name recognition for success in a highly saturated market vs. their core product offerings. I don’t know that a full acquisition would open up many avenues to growth, especially if we corrupt the authenticity. Nike can’t help but reduce costs to increase margins, the consumer notices. Something with good intent at the beginning would be corrupted by our go-to operating procedure long term. I’d love it if someone proved me wrong.

@hp If it works Nike buys the company and technology. Its worth the money loss.

@cm People often underestimate what innovation really costs. By the time you factor in contracts, legal, sourcing, supply chain, engineering, development, manufacturing, tooling, molds, testing, and integration, companies invest millions before a product ever reaches the market. Much of that investment is embedded in the people who make it happen. From firsthand experience, I can tell you that knowledge isn’t easily replaced, and the true cost of losing it is rarely recovered.

All the electronic integration projects are basically $20 million dollar+ pet projects that can be chalked up to trying to convince people we do tech too. Not many from core innovation teams even work on them. A lot of that money is going external.

@c8 100% spot on. We should ask people in that building how much money and time they spent to bring this to market. I guarantee the answer will blow our minds.

Unfortunately, this is not going to save us, still just a hype.

@c8 same with Amplify, innovation is reliant on re/cobranding with external tech partners

No, trying too hard. It's not innovation, it's integration.

Just make wider shoes and those will sell better than these.

You're welcome.

@a3 think hyper adapt, fuel band etc. great ideas. Couldn’t sustain growth due to the lack of a repeatable business model or high cost for consumer. Feel like a similar path..

@OP There isn't a viable business model in these types of developments. Hyperice has built a successful business around it; Nike hasn't. That's not speculation, it's based on firsthand experience.
