RootMetrics losses to AT&T

Wireless is losing to AT&T in more markets than usual in the RootMetrics comparative benchmarks. The New England region is particularly hard hit. Losses in Boston, Hartford, Providence, and Worcester. They seem to be taking Dan at his word that he doesn’t care all that much about being the best network!

The Root cause is "Every Project is a Priority" which means that the most critical projects and the least impactful ones get treated the same and the low hanging fruit get implemented regardless of impact.

@b9 Swapping every RRH under deadline imposed a huge burden that would’ve been easily avoided by sticking with Nokia baseband after it acquired ALU. Had they done that, they would have had more time to swap RRHs because Nokia would have had to support their own legacy RRH. They were so gung-ho on mmWave that they threw out baby Nokia with the bath water. This is in large part a self inflicted problem.

New England was always ranked near the bottom but I agree that merging with OPW wasn’t the smartest idea. Some New Englanders might even call it reta’hded! 😉

@by It seems to me that tower companies and Site Acq love building sites in the wrong locations! It guarantees more future business for them.

No capital being spent on building our network so yeh, Verizon’s network su-ks compared to the competition. And when we do spend capital, it’s building sites in the wrong locations.

@aw Priorities undergoing a hard 180 degree turn every 6-12 months is a time-honored tradition at VZW. Many SDs and EDs have done that and it’s a clear indication that they lack a coherent strategy.

I’m old enough to remember when they focused exclusively on mmWave 5G because they claimed that 5G in lower bands was “fake 5G”. Then came the 180 degree turn to 850MHz and the enormous workload and time pressure that ensued.

Well, when OPW took over NE, the OPW senior director thought NE was stupid for focusing on root/get well and said our only priority should be ESNAP. All focus went to swapping Nokia radios. C-band adds that came with rent increases got put on hold no matter how critical the sites were for root. Then new drive metrics came out, OPW panicked about the losses in NE, and guess what we’re being told we need to focus on now?

There’s a single point of failure for the New England network and he sits in Ohio.

@a5 The problem is the network IS the company! Connectivity is the product we offer. I understand the old guard strategy of simply saying "we have the best network, and that's enough. People should want to pay more for our superior network" is over. However, you still have to have a network that is at least as good as your competitors. Right now, our network quality has noticeably deteriorated ever since we started rolling out 5G. If Dan doesn't GAF about the network, he will pretty soon.

@OP It makes no business sense to care about it beyond what it's able to get us and maintain for us. Table stakes never stop evolving. Are some of the things you valued and developed in your quest for your first real job receiving less of your attention today, vs things you consider necessary to now advance?
