Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Bring back good — ditch the bad

Can we bring back good leaders to Nike? Those who left or RIF’d people actually liked and/or at least did great work and delivered results? Ones who their teams liked working for? I don’t even care if liked, but if delivered can we petition to get them back?!?

Who do we go after? I just want to have competent leadership again.

So many good leaders that have left after the reorg to better opportunities as they know this ship is sinking. Shows the current mess that we are in and the current "leaders" are blind to it.

I doubt any of the good Nike leaders would ever want to come back, especially the senior ones. Its not about pay at that point but very much about who you are surrounded with and who you work for. Many of these top leaders, especially in technology, have gone on to get better jobs (VP, SVP and CIO) for companies way larger than Nike.

You’re assuming that those good leaders would even want to come back.

The entire ELT would probably need to be replaced, first. You’d need to find a CEO who they knew and believed in.

@aj Translation: “I said something stupid, someone dismantled it, and now I’m pretending their ability to form paragraphs is the embarrassing part.” Calling it an “op-ed” doesn’t make you clever, "boss" it just confirms that anything longer than a bumper sticker exceeds your intellectual bandwidth.

@a8 maybe took the OP a little too literally there boss. Quite the thoughtful op-ed there.

@OP I love the confidence here, like Nike has a tiny parliament hidden behind the berm where employees can overthrow leadership with enough upvotes.

“Can we petition to get them back?” Sure. Maybe after that we can vote on quarterly earnings, elect the CFO by popular ballot, and let the cafeteria decide the org chart.

Nike is a publicly traded corporation. It is not a democracy, a co-op, a student council, or your fantasy football league. Executives and the board make leadership decisions based on business strategy, performance, politics, succession plans, cost, and a dozen other factors employees will never see.

Also, “my team liked this person” is not exactly a rigorous leadership metric. Plenty of incompetent leaders are charming. Plenty of effective leaders are difficult. Popularity is not a KPI.

Recommend talented people? Absolutely.

Pretend there is some employee constitutional mechanism for resurrecting your favorite former VP? That is adorable.

There is no ballot box at WHQ. You work for Nike, not the Republic of Swoosh.
