Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

The sinking ship

With the ship clearly sinking, why would anyone join Medtronic now? Please, if you joined in the last year or two, can you share why? I'm genuinely curious.

@wn
Exactly this. Medtronic keeps updating processes and expects us to drop everything to comply.

For many OUs, there is no "real" product pipeline. Sure, there are planned releases, but they are not really meaningful to business or the customer. The reality is, many of these markets are getting mature, the products and the technology don't have a lot of innovation runway left. These markets are probably ripe for disruption, but of the most part, Medtronic does not do that organically. So the future for many of these OUs is cost cutting while margins sink until they just don't fit in the MDT finance paradigm and they get spun our or divested. That's a su-k place to be if you are an R&D person. I suggest moving on, unless you really enjoy sustaining work,- which some do. But true innovation is not in these OUs' future - you know who you are. Also, Digital strategies (mine data, move data around) with no business model that delivers revenue won't save your margins. Don't buy the hype.

The problem with MDT is all about more profit comparing to the quarter or previous year. another is they are replacing experience with in experience , next all ancillary functions keep changing work content to save $ while pushing everything down to the Engineers trying to Innovate etc. MDT needs to stop changing stuff to save money which the changes are 95% worse in getting things done

Invest your ESPP dollars in Lilly, VRTX or JNJ.

Medtronic is a huge company. Not everyone’s experience is the same. Your role, function, and leadership team shapes your experience and that could be vastly different than the other posters here. There can be pockets of greatness just like there can be pockets of te---r.

Been here 10 years in a support function that interacts with all OUs, BUs and functions. Different teams get different experiences based on what they do for the company. But it’s definitely not the same company as when I started. There’s definitely less care about employees than there used to be.

I hate Medtronic is outsourcing so many of our jobs to India and forcing us to train them until we get RIF.

I’m grateful for the experience and opportunities I got during my career at Medtronic until I was RIFd this year. It was a great place to work through Omar’s tenure, and steadily declined with Geoff. Lots of outsourcing formerly local positions, lots of focus on social issues and R&D suffered greatly, and a lot of remote leadership tasked with making decisions for BUs they had no experience with.

Just like with politics, when you think something is not going right, there will eventually be a change in leadership, and the ship will course correct.

I wish that for all of the current employees of the company.

This OP is a lazy worker su-king all the nutrients out of Medtronic. I hope you quit and leave for companies with very low standards and talents.

I’m sorry but how is it “clearly” sinking? By what measure?

Well, I joined the Surgical Robotics group as a principal development engineer. The money they offered was fantastic, even coming from a well known surgical robotics company where I was, Medtronic was super competitive. I love the work, travel and folks I work with. 2.5 years now and ticking. You should try harder in life and not tear down a good company.

When you really need a job to feed the family and pay the bills, you do whatever it takes. Some of us struggle through life.
