Another PayPal Hire

They’ve hired another PayPal leader, and I’m honestly very happy about it. At this point, anyone would be an improvement over Tanya J. and Nancy C.

I just hope the new leader recognizes how much of the old leadership culture is still holding us back—and how slowly some teams in the digital space move.

I also hope they take a hard look at the ridiculous structure we have today, where it takes 5–6 stakeholders just to get a single button added to a digital page.

I’m really hoping this brings a meaningful cultural shift, with more accountability, faster decision-making, and a lot less bureaucracy.

@ak this times a 1000%. IT wastes more time and money on the fluff that clients ask for but no one is going to use anyway. All this instead of fixing applications that have been broken since 2018.

Well it’s not so much it takes 5-6 stakeholders to add a button. It’s more so there are 5-6 stakeholders to every 1 competent developer who can understand the ask and do it in an hour. In addition to that GTS has its own work going on just keeping the lights on and trying new things. Then 5-6 stakeholders enter the picture and ask for a button that no one actually believes will provide any ROI for its addition. So GTS just ducks and dives the ask because the ask is nonsense. At the end of the day a software developer can lead a stand up call and align work for themselves and their team. The software developer can then deliver the work. A stakeholder can only align the work and host the call. They cannot actually deliver the work. So we exist in this state where the stakeholders outnumber the actual competent developers that can deliver the work. That doesn’t make any sense. Yet GTS has received more aggressive cuts the past couple of years than the stakeholder side. Then we scratch our head and wonder why a button is so hard to add when there are 6 people asking about the button, 1 person who understands how to add the button, and no one thinks the button is important really it’s just what they have been told to do.

Tanya, Nancy S, Nasrin have been no direction for over 5 years, their Senior Director is wrapped up on his own ego, more interested in intimidating his direct reports of do it now and or hiring people based on non technical abilities.
