Oracle always had a reputation of being ruthless in regards to job security. Is IBM now worse than Oracle? I know the technology companies are all ruthless including Microsoft, AWS, Google, Salesforce and Oracle. Better job security in general is to work for a customer. No guarantees anywhere of course. But everyone I talked to in the past said Oracle was among the worst. My kids in the past have asked me about working for IBM and I had to be honest about what they might be getting into.

Alvind and his PIPmunks aren't ruthless. They're incompetent m0r0ns.
@b8 not ruthless it’s more like incompetent that at first looks like ruthless
@b2 IBM lost it ways for awhile now and instead of correcting it just double and tripled down on leaders and managers who constantly flounder their upward. It’s a cultural change that occurred 20 years ago and it just isn’t working but we never learn from our mistakes. It’s the definition of insanity.
When I started in tech in the early 80s with IBM IBM and HP both still were the best of the best and still valued employees from their founders TJ Watson Sr and Bill Hewlett and John Packard. DEC also with Ken Olsen. Now it is my belief that a decline starts when the founder leaves. Jensen Huang founder and CEO at NVIDIA is brilliant and humble and is on record saying he avoids layoffs as it is devastating and it is much better to invest and correct someone than showing them the door. Correct. People at NVIDIA seem to love it. Blue collar workers do seem to have it better these days with pensions and amazing salaries. All you can do is keep your skills up and network. I was never one to brown nose and it got me in trouble more than once but I would not have changed a thing. SPEAK UP and OPEN DOOR from IBM and INFORMED RISK TAKING and CONSTRUCTIVE CONFRONTATION from Intel is how I rolled most of my 44 years in tech.
Alvind and Larry are both slimy.
Corporations aren’t designed to be these happy places where people hold hands, get along, and “cheerlead” for the mission. They exist to keep a very small number of people very, very rich based on the sweat, labor, and pain of worker bees like all of us here. This is what I keep in mind every day. Fake it till you make it.
So we should just use the resources at these places for our own benefit and then build the confidence and skills to leave on our own terms and conditions. No will care more about your success than you.
