@kc Or the job is quietly sent offshore.
Larry needed some more face cream
There's no redundancy. Your job needs to still be done, so that work is now piled onto the people that are left, in addition to their own.
@OP O just not give reasons , they send emails to ur inbox !!
The mundane script that gets recited by M or HR is : "Due to restructuring, this job position is no more required. It has nothing to do with you or your performance"
But deep down , we all know , this is so true !! It is due to your management and their's (lack of ) performance ;-)
@OP I was just told that my role was eliminated, so I and the others doing it were released from employment.
Yes. A family member had just graduated and needed a job with H1B sponsorship.
@da While what you say is correct, laying someone off is the safe option, especially if you can get the terminated to sign away any right to sue in exchange for a few weeks of severance.
In USA it is employment at will meaning either the employer or the employee can end the employment relationship at any time, for any reason or for no reason at all. You don't need to give any justification why you need to end. In other countries this could be different where specially the employer need to provide justification to government body prior to doing mass layoffs, or provide justification to the employee.
@bj I suppose it depends on the circumstances. Getting the news from someone you don't know can be as impersonal as an email. I suppose those who got the zoom invite for a "business update" knew at that moment what the "update" was.
I've been laid off from a different Fortune 500 firm. Being told nothing more than "your position has been eliminated" is pretty much par for the course in corporate America, just as having to sign that you won't sue is required to get severance.
@aq did that really make it better for you? If I am going to get laid off I would rather just find out and start to move on. Sitting through some awkward video conference would be more of a punishment to me. At least the email documents everything so I don't have to try and take notes during the video conference. Getting fired s-cks no matter how they do it.
@ak Last year the dejobbed at least got a zoom call.
If I recall correctly, all that is said is "your position has been eliminated"
Reason? How about waking up to a termination email with no human contact?
Who says your job has to be redundant in order to get laid off? They are cutting costs, people cost a lot of money. What ever you were doing could be done for less or it was just not needed.
