Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Back to School - It is shaping up to be a Disaster!

Compared to this same time last year, everything is trending in the wrong direction:

  • Customer Success output is way down — fewer courses built, slower turnaround, more backlog.
  • IA/EA adoptions are noticeably lower across multiple disciplines.
  • Salesforce closed business is so far behind that leadership is blaming “CRM hygiene” instead of acknowledging the real problem.
  • Faculty frustration is rising — some are openly threatening to switch materials.
  • Customer Success and reps are already exhausted, and it’s not even September.

We’re running back‑to‑school with a skeleton crew and a roll of duct tape. Org chart vacancies everywhere. New hires who don’t understand their roles or the workflows they’re supposed to support. Experienced colleagues continuing to exit, and many who remain are actively looking for new careers.

And here’s the part leadership won’t say out loud:

This is NOT what Apollo wanted heading into an IPO.
Apollo expected a clean, stable, predictable back‑to‑school season — something they could point to when selling the story to Wall Street. Instead, they’re getting:

collapsing workflows
missed in‑stock dates
angry faculty
exhausted teams
shrinking adoption pipelines
declining IA/EA momentum
internal confusion about roles, ownership, and accountability

This is the opposite of “IPO‑ready.”

And it all ties back to the May 1st reorg.
The May 1st reorg removed the last wave of people who actually understood Higher Ed The people who stabilized operations, built courses correctly, managed timelines, and kept faculty relationships intact.

In their place, leadership installed a structure full of:

  • inexperienced managers
  • unclear roles
  • pods stretched across institutions
  • Customer Success teams drowning in work
  • reps covering territories that make no sense
  • workflows patched together with duct tape

The May 1st reorg wasn’t a “reset.”
It was a detonation, and we’re living in the blast radius.

Apollo wanted a clean runway to an IPO. Instead, they got a back‑to‑school season that looks like a controlled crash.

Employees can see it.
Faculty can feel it.
Customers are talking about it.
And the numbers reflect it.

This isn’t “a tough year.”
It’s a disaster, one created by leadership decisions that gutted the last of the real industry talent right before the busiest stretch of the year.

If Apollo thought the May 1st reorg would make Cengage look stronger heading into an IPO, they’re now seeing the truth:

You can’t cut your way to stability.
You can’t reorganize your way to expertise.
And you can’t IPO your way out of operational collapse.

@bs you clearly don’t work at Cengage or you’d know how in the tank it is, both morale and sales.

@bq you don't work at Cengage, you are the same person posting the same tired message, post after post after post.

This post is spot on.

I currently work at Cengage. Culture is abysmal.

Hansen has spent the last 2 years gaslighting everyone with buzzy themes like project horizon! in order to stretch out the hardest working and cheapest staff to this pre-ipo position. Without a doubt, the only mission for Hansen and Apollo is a clean exit at a huge multiple.

They don't care about anything, nothing, except for how good they can make this cr-p festival look on paper pre-IPO. They don't care about customers, staff, culture, nothing. It is now down to 3 phases: IPO --> pump stock (to post lockup) --> sell.

Most all staff is checked out, spiteful, distrusting of "management" (giant air quotes here) and looking for jobs elsewhere.

Post IPO, here is what will happen: Cengage will miss on earnings, by a lot, and the largest institutions holding shares will demand more layoffs. It isn't over. No one is safe.

This place has 2 years or less, tops.

Feckless sc--wball Hansen, of course, has gone into hiding.
No more "First Friday" meetings with his favorite white rapper intro music, because he has nothing left to spin.

@OP A lot of people with institutional knowledge and years of tenure have left or are leaving due to the April 2025 and May 2026 layoffs. The remaning people are told to pick up the scraps.

@ac you only know how to bring politics in it when it has zero to do with politics. Your side can’t even decide what a woman is but go on.

@ad That’s funny, considering you’re the same person creating posts and then replying to yourself from other accounts. Honestly, I feel sad for you. Do you actually think anyone here still cares what you’re saying? Do you think Apollo is going to change course because you posted the same rant 100 times? Do you think Cengage’s leadership team is reading or taking any of these fake messages seriously?

What exactly is your goal? This site is about layoffs. If you have legitimate information about layoffs, then share it. Otherwise, stop hijacking every conversation with the same obsessive nonsense.

We’ve heard you. You think an IPO is coming and it’s the end of days for Cengage. Great. Message received. Now leave some room for other people to share real information about what’s actually happening.

We can all thank NK for this. It was his way or the highway even though so many tried to warn him this org set up would be a colossal mistake. And it’s proven to be worse than that.

Maybe MH is steering the ship into the rocks on purpose so he can activate his Golden Parachute or Golden raft in this story.

Apollo is being put into a position where they either have to fix this fast or make leadership changes.

If they Don’t Care then I won’t care either!

Actions speak louder than words,,, If you want me to care then get the Executive Team ( the fools making all the poor decisions) to do some of this day to day work. The real work and stop evaluating data.

Follow my lead…. Stop doing things not in your job description. ET needs to see their mistakes and bad decisions.
