Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Manager avoiding 1-1

He didn’t even care to talk with me regarding bonus/raise/performance review. Keeps delaying the conversations- should I expect to be in the RA list?

Some managers avoid 1:1, because they are being tasked with ridiculous urgent meetings constantly about the others to RA. You may be fine. As a former manger, the people most stressed about RA’s were the people least likely to be RA’d. Or could be my case, I had to layoff everyone and then process my own layoff paperwork. Mainly because my India replacement had no idea how to do any managerial work at all. I followed up, and that person failed at my job, so, they were promoted! Can’t make this up.

@gv There are exceptions to the rule: Managers at IBM are useless POS.

I is rare, but I know of a few managers at IBM who quit after being asked to do things to fire some of their employees.

@g7 When managers make decision, it is not based on ethics or morality. It is for their own survivals. Managers know quite well, they are useless POS.
They ensure to extend the survival for their own undeserved paychecks for as long as possible. Managers follow the lead of the slimy Indian at the top, to lie, cheat, scam and kick the can down the road.

There are managers who know this conduct is wrong and not above board. I believe most are aware that using PIPs and LPs this way is inappropriate and contradicts their stated purpose, as well as our business ethics training and formal policies. They know these programs are being misused, abused, and we-ponized with questionable intent. Even those who do not care are likely uneasy, knowing that such misuse exposes them to complaints and other consequences. They feel uneasy for using things is a misleading way when we often pride ourselves on being straight sho-ters and letting the data speak for itself.

Back in the day, I was "surplused". That's the word that was used by old timers...instead of "You've been RA'd", the proper lingo was "You've been surplused".

As it turns out, the first line manager who "surplused" me was surplused 3 months after me. He went from IBM manager to being a high school teacher. A step down in salary at the time, but probably a greater increase in benefits and job security.

Maybe there's another reason that the manager isn't talking.

Everyday you should think you're on the RA list especially if your 45 or older. When I got my RA call after I called my wife and said my number was drawn for RA. No surprise on my part or her's.

Yes this is exactly what happened to me. One year I went from high performer to having every one on one cancelled the day of the meeting to then my manager not even bothering to reschedule at all. Sadly almost all the managers follow this mo now.

@bv
It might not be laziness, your manager might still have a sliver of conscience (very, very few managers have one) and he is feeling slightly guilty about what is bringing to you.

My manager is also avoiding 1:1. The main reason: he is lazy...
