Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Regulators Need to Step In Here

One thing that needs to be pointed out right away is that of the more than 25,000 employees Verizon had when Dan Schulman took over as CEO, none have been members of the telecommunications union. He hasn't laid off a single union worker. He has completely focused on managerial and sales professionals.

The second thing that needs to be pointed out is that the reason no union members have been laid off is that the governments of California and New York would only approvate Verizon's acquisition of Frontier Communications if the union jobs were preserved. Presumably, =managerial and sales workers also vote, so one has to wonder why thee government regulators did nothing to protect Verizon's non-union workers. A lot of Verizon workers who were laid off were replaced by Frontier workers. It's sick, The merger should not have been approved without a guaranty of no layoffs. Our governments failed us.

Beyond that, Verizon's layoffs were unfair and indiscriminate. People with stellar performance reviews, in line for promotions, were suddenly let go, without recourse. Dan Schulman and his new management team did not even meet with the people they fired.

Verizon is in a highly regulated industry and should be sanctioned for its behavior.

@dv Lets not blame Home Internet for all of Wireless being gutted. It didn't fail to be honest with you, the greater issue is the network. There were alot of things that were suppose to be done to fortify it and the higher ups kept pushing it back because they believed the network we had in 2015 is still the best now. They spent the money in the wrong places

@OP the merger with Frontier should have never taken place. Verizon has a history of buying over-valued companies, and never being able to work them in strategically. It’s called shooting from the hip. And in Frontier’s case, why would you buy an asset back that you just got done selling off? Makes no sense. Verizon lacks Vision—great new tagline!

@bv when my kids were growing I was a little league coach, scout leader, volunteer fireman, class parent and we had dinner together every single night. You know who wasn’t around? The white collar parents of the kids in my town. They weren’t there for their kids, they didn’t contribute much to their community and guys like me were surrogate fathers to their kids as they worked til 10pm and left for work at 6am and raked in those big bucks.

@by Wireless is being gutted because the great 5 G home internet failed so badly. Heads had to roll. Meanwhile, the Fios build has started up again. Sorry wireless folks, it’s game over.

25,000 employees when Dan took over???
There are over 100,000 when he took over.
Compare that to 25 years ago when there were over 200,000
The downsizing has been going on for decades... and will continue.

The company could lay off any Union workers hired after August 2003 and they did in 2009.

You can never lay off associates. It’s in their contract. Not sure what you are talking about. The only time that can happen is if they declare a surplus which takes a lot of legal justification and agreements with the unions. Union employees get offered packages to leave. Voluntary. Never forced. Unlike management who aren’t unionized under a contract.

Unions are just terrific if you don't mind being lumped in with the worst performer and don't care to get ahead in life. If all you want is a guaranteed paycheck and job security, that's the place to go.

I've done far better in life and financially without a union dictating my career path

Or maybe the company is keeping the important people on the ground doing the actual work and letting go all the excess employees sitting in their office chair complaining

It just might be that simple
