What CL are principal engineers? Are they the highest spot on technical side other than chief? What CL is chief? Do principals and chiefs rank well?

@ex Way to dodge the point. We are not giving anybody the principal title five years out of school. There could be some extreme edge case of a PhD with a post doc, in which case they’re considered an experienced hire and pretty far along in their career. But otherwise you’re completely full of cr-p.
Principal, Sr Principal, Distinguished engineering Associate, and Chief used to mean something. They represented the highest level of competencies. Not anymore.
Titles are cheap and are handed out like candy. Directors and VPs titles mean nothing. Only important if they are at the board level of a major company.
What really count in the end is the job that you enjoy, the compensation (not CL), and the opportunity for growth. It is icing on the cake when you get recognition from your peers, people you respect inside and outside of Exxon. Respect has to be earned.
@ep Even five years is a low experience threshold if the title is intended to actually mean something.
If all the title represents is a pay grade, then go ahead and knock yourselves out. Just don’t expect to get hired or succeed in a non-oil company at a the principal level.
BS. There are no principal engineers in the company with less than five years of experience.
@OP I don’t know, but the title itself is a joke.
I talked to one of your “principal engineers” and he was (at the time) less than five years out of an undergraduate program and used “rule of thumb” in every other sentence he spoke.
And yes, he was whiter than a whiteboard, so let’s not start in with the DEI BS please. Turns out everyone is garbage at their jobs now, regardless of their race or gender. So I guess we achieved equality? Profound.
Senior expert along with senior principle go up to 31. Chiefs are 33
CL-28/29 has historically been the "Principals"
CL-30/31 was Chief
Historically you could make it up to 29 as a Principal
