There are just too many people between the work and the results. Managers of managers, directors of nothing, and their only real skill is creating more meetings and more politics. They think they're helping, but they're really just slowing everything down. Get rid of them in the next round of cuts and we'll all be better off.

@e3 yes, just imagine everyone above you takes a cut off your hard work to justify their existence.
@b0 depends from the department. I'm a G grade and have 4 people between me and Meg. I think 9 is quite crazy.
@OP spot on. And I’m one of them and as a result am acutely aware of my lack of impact. The layers that have proliferated over the years is mind boggling and needs a chainsaw taken to it. But not sure it will happen esp as those that are cronyistically inside the tent will just be left or redeployed elsewhere.
Is this not the entire point? But with only 700 folks as a target, it will fall way short. That’s only a 200-300 mm cost savings. If it was 3000, I would be thrilled.
@a3 lanyardism is ki-ling this company. Too much time filling quotas, and worrying about the psychological safety of trans blokes and not enough time ruthlessly hiring the best of the best.
Very well stated! I’m a G level engineer and I found 9 persons between me and Meg in the org chart. None of my previous employers has this mind boggling level of hierarchy.
Absolutely agree the layers have become a drag on delivery. We’ve reached a point where some roles exist purely to supervise process rather than produce outcomes. When a manager of managers can’t explain their value beyond meetings, decks, self promotion and taking credit for other peoples, that’s a problem.
The work is done at the edges, but the decisions get stuck in the middle. Too many people reviewing, aligning, approving, and “socialising” things that should just move. It slows execution, ki-ls accountability, and creates politics where none is needed.
If we’re serious about speed and results, then yes the next round of cuts should focus on the layers that add noise instead of impact. Keep the people who unblock and enable, remove the ones who only observe and comment.
A leaner structure would make the whole place breathe again.
