AJ would probably have removed more than half of the tech organization long ago if she had a clear view of what engineering is actually delivering. A significant portion of engineering adds very little value, and many of the so-called engineering leads are ineffective. I’ve seen VP-level leaders create multiple versions of applications and services ,they lack the spine to force business to retire old versions. Now folks are maintaining so many versions of several applications/services created by the so called all knowing engineering leads!
There are lots of very senior people in architecture creating work for themselves and not really doing much or adding value. It seems easy for people to hide in a big company like this, especially when the goals set by senior leaders are so high level and vague. People seem to carve out work for themselves and sell it upwards as achieving something important.
Weak leadership and no one making decisions further sends people in circles working against each other and not achieving what they otherwise could be. Fidelity has had the same problems for decades and nothing really changes and we pretend reorgs and new faces will change things.
Is the role needed...yes, has leadership empowered architects and created a culture where things can actually get done.....no. We have way too many architects. I understand why because on paper they're important and easy to justify. If AJ was close enough to reality though and understood what she was really getting for her money I think you'd see a lot of change. I'm sure this isn't just true for architecture. We've got too many more important things to focus on though like monitoring badge swipes

Architects are enjoying their lifes they come in at 9:30 attend meetings and leave by 3/3:30 for their kids. These Dinosaurs are the highest paid with lowest work designing shambolic applications architecture which doesn't scale, hence recruit more of these architects to do nothing. 6 hours 2212=1,584 hours Max hours worked in a year negate 240 + hours PTO, they literally are found in cafeteria's and break rooms spreading conspiracy theories. Dinosaurs thrives around here
