Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

We are not alone

From Gemini:

Prompt: Rank the top 20 layoffs by number of employees laid off in the last 12 months by company

Feedback:
Over the last 12 months (August 2025 to August 2026), corporate workforce reductions have been heavily concentrated in tech, telecom, automotive, and financial services. The primary drivers remain corporate restructuring to fund massive AI infrastructure expansions, automation of legacy processes, supply-chain shifts, and cost realignment.

Top 20 Mass Layoffs by Headcount (Last 12 Months)

Rank Company Headcount Cut Primary Industry Primary Stated Driver / Context
1 Oracle ~30,000 Tech / Software Enterprise-wide cuts (approx. 18% of workforce) to redirect capital toward AI data center expansion.
2 UPS ~30,000 Logistics & Shipping Operations downsizing driven by reduced Amazon volume and network automation.
3 Citigroup ~20,000 Financial Services Multi-year corporate overhaul streamlining management layers and back-office functions.
4 Volkswagen ~19,000 Automotive Early retirement, voluntary departures, and cost reduction during EV transition in Europe.
5 Amazon ~16,000+ Tech / E-Commerce Management layer reduction, fulfillment automation, and shifts in AWS/retail teams.

10 Microsoft ~8,800 Tech / Software Targeted cuts and voluntary buyout programs (Rule of 70) across cloud and gaming divisions.
11 Meta ~8,000 Tech / Social Media Trimming Reality Labs and corporate operations to fund AI super-talent and compute clusters.
12 Procter & Gamble ~7,000 Consumer Goods Supply chain adjustments and organizational restructuring to counter tariff cost pressures.

19 Nike ~1,600+ Retail / Apparel Corporate overhead reduction and technology group restructuring.
20 Autodesk ~1,350 Software Sales organization restructuring amid shifts to automated self-service and cloud platforms.
Structural Trends
Capital Re-allocation to AI: Over half of the technology and IT service companies on this list explicitly framed workforce reductions not as simple distress cuts, but as cash re-allocation to acquire high-demand AI compute clusters and specialized AI talent.
Shift to Attrition & Voluntary Buyouts: Enterprise giants like Volkswagen and Microsoft favored structured voluntary buyout packages, early retirement programs, and hiring freezes over abrupt mass-termination events.

@e9 By missing the point of the post, do you mean the copy and paste of an AI response to a prompt that doesn't give accurate numbers as they relate to Verizon or the telecommunications industry as a whole and puts the list in an order that is not contextually accurate to Verizon's position of laying off a higher percentage than a lot of other companies?

Then putting some of the numbers in better context while pointing out that it is almost impossible to be fully accurate due the Verizon's redefining of the facts. And adding personal experience for clarification and suggesting how others can avoid the misleading information by informing themselves. (Actual Intelligence) While also acknowledging the frustration of the environment and how nice it is to not feel alone in this mess knowing that people here are supportive. For the most part...

My apologies. I did it all based on real world experience and knowledge. Not by asking someone named Gemini to tell me what to think.

Thank you. I see my mistake and I will try to do better next time.

And my therapist says I am fine now.

@br Nice try but no. They wouldn't touch me with a ten foot abacus because I won't help them cook the books. They really need to be investigated by some outside regulatory agency more than any other group. But there is always plausible deniability where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing (why working in silos is SOP) or "human error" when a scapegoat is needed to protect the people that actually put the plan in motion. With maybe $100 million or more in fines and/or lawsuits paid out over the last couple years it is probably just a cost of doing business to Verizon. Remind me, how was much set aside for employee reskilling? 20 million? That would rekill about 10k employees at about $2k a year for role specific training. I guess the remaining 70k-80k are SOL.

@bz Depends on who you ask. 13k for the big one. A few hundred more in May and then July when about 3k were cut. Which was officially defined as 2,500 retail and 500 corp management. I said "couple" using the casual definition meaning between 2k or 3k. And it is 50% larger when looking at which value to use but when added to the 13k it becomes 15k or 16k.... Which is a 6.67% difference. It's all about perspective and the narrative you want to drive home. This is how Verizon manipulates people in to believing that things did not happen that clearly did and vice versa. Verizon takes two views that have drastically different results and uses the one that supports their agenda even if it is out of context from the message. They are banking on you not knowing any better.

Really, when all of the micro layoffs in 2026 are added into the mix, it may be well over 3k. But depending on who you ask, does the 2,500 count if they were transitioned to another company? Or rebadged even? That is were Verizon excels. Redefining terms to put a positive spin on them so they look better. Leadership without leaders, successes that are actually failures, gains that are actually losses. Left that is right, up that is down. And they are betting that the workforce is too ignorant to know the difference or are people pleasers who would never say anything against what daddy says.

"Just look me in the eyes and say I'm wrong" - Corey Taylor

@c0 This right here. Compare like to like.

Don't fooled by the manipulators and learn how to see the truth yourself.

So many on this site have got it down and what they say is supported by what I know to be true. I'm not the only one. (Cue the chorus here. IYKYK)

Some are trying to learn.

Some are in denial.

Some are plants trying shift the narrative and cast doubt.

AND SOME ARE ANARCHISTS WHO ARE NEITHER LEFT NOR RIGHT AND ONLY WANT TO INSTIGATE, GASLIGHT AND WATCH THE WORLD BURN.

So know which one you are and just as importantly know your en--a.

Enemy. I meant enemy.

How wild is it that I spent years thinking this was all isolated to one area only to come here and discover that an untold number of departments are working on an untold number of projects going through an untold number of management levels and not one department can say for sure what any other department is doing or does and, at the core, the root cause and effect is the same. Chaos, confusion and planned failure that is never truly revealed.

And yet, phones are still sold. Cell towers still work. And Verizon still claims record profits.

Could you imagine if Verizon got their stuff together and acted responsibly? They could rule the world. Like the way Taco Bell was the sole survivor of the Franchise Wars in Demolition Man.

@af It's already half the company it used to be.

What’s more relevant for us here is accurate numbers (VZ is more like 16k, not 13) and comparing companies like T mobile and At&T (layed off 11k & 8k the past 12 months respectively) instead sectors that have absolutely nothing to do with us

@af So which is it? A couple of thousand or 3k? There's a big difference. One number is 50% larger than the other.

@OP Oooo, numbers. Methinks your Verizon number is off by a couple of thousand. Maybe you missed the 3k from a couple of weeks ago? Unless of course you didn't count people who no longer work for Verizon because they were sold off to another company that will dump them later. But that would identify you as a senior manager or director because that is how they roll.

Let's try showing the percentage laid off or left from the total workforce before the ax started swinging.

Oracle went from about 160k down to about 140k and laid off about 21k (13% approx)

UPS is at about 460k after a 48k reduction (a little over 10%)

Verizon is not very big coming in at about 85k after cutting about 15k (about 15%) of the 99k it had before this all started.

Seems that Verizon is the smallest of the three but had the largest percentage of layoffs.

I wonder how that would play out if we continue down your list to see where Verizon really ranks. At the rate Verizon is going, it will be half to company it used to be a few years ago.
