While they talk big about accelerating molecular modeling and predictive physics, the reality on the ground is that off-the-shelf generative AI models and vendor-driven copilots are already doing 80% of that heavy lifting at a fraction of the cost.
​Instead of delivering proprietary breakthroughs, the team has mostly turned into an expensive storytelling unit—crafting polished internal narratives to justify compute budgets that no longer match output. With executive leadership prioritizing lean operations and immediate ROI across digital tech, maintaining a dedicated in-house computational unit simply doesn't hold up. Expect the function to be absorbed or cut entirely in the upcoming Shell reorg.
