Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

With RTO, weekend support?

We have a release every other Saturday and it takes most of the day in validating etc. they dont pay us extra and it is said its part of your job. Why should we support this since that would mean extra hours put in every other weekend with no compensation.

@eq For FTE salaried employees it doesn't matter how many hours you reach by what day of the week. You're expected to always be on-site in compliance with the attendance policy. Maybe for contractors it's different idk about that.

But the cut & dry of it is right now if you aren't badged in for a certain amount of hours when HR expects you to be, then that's a guaranteed demerit against you and puts you on a list for potentially no bonus or even potential termination. They do not care if you put in extra hours on or off site.

Ask me how I know, it's because I was part of the large group of people who got rug pulled and told at the end of the year I wouldn't receive any bonus at all due to insufficient on-site attendance.

@gb - don’t leave before the payout dates just for the principal of it. I know commutes are going to be hard for a while but they probably calculated that all the people over 50 miles will probably leave and they can save X dollars on those people for bonus and shares. Don’t leave until you get your money! F them!

@gb I'd hit the like button again if I could. Fidelity's compensation is decent, but nowhere near as impressive as it's made out to be and with far too many strings. It's been getting progressively worse over the years, too.

@g4 The point you're making seems to be that employees need their base salary, bonus, and profit sharing combined just to match the base pay that many competing companies offer.

But that ignores all the conditions attached to those benefits. Leave before a payout date and you lose that money. If you're laid off, profit sharing disappears, and severance is smaller because it's calculated from salary rather than total compensation. The 401(k) match also takes years to fully vest. Add in the extra hours many people work and the higher commuting costs from RTO, and the effective value drops even further. On top of that, retirement contributions aren't money you can access when you need financial flexibility today.

The way Fidelity structures compensation doesn't actually leave you better off if you're financially disciplined. Someone who can consistently save and invest on their own is often better served by higher guaranteed pay than by compensation that's deferred, conditional, and locked up for years.

@dh did you forget your profit sharing. May not mean much now, but when you're in your 50s and could possibly retire...it will mean alot.

@dv it absolutely does if you reach 40 hours by Thursday due to having worked on the prior weekend and have any semblance of a spine. Or they can take the Saturday shift and stick it. Its their choice, but it is just that - a choice of either/or, not both.

Anyone hearing how the bonus will be this year?

@cb That argument might hold more weight if Fidelity paid competitive base salaries and consistently delivered full bonuses. Instead, they keep base pay on the low side, rely on the bonus to encourage people to stay through year-end in hopes of reaching market-level compensation, and then often pay out well below target—even for employees who exceeded expectations.

At some point, with all the dinosaurs at the top, they are putting Fid at high risk. Dinosaurs are older and more susceptible to being ill and stepping away. Most of Abby's reports have been at Fid for 20 years, 1 up to 40 years. Yikes!

@a8 in theory that would be a nice and reasonable compromise. but the problem now is HR has no intent on being lenient about missing week days on site. They do not care if you worked nights or over the weekend, to them any week days without 5-8 hours on site is still gonna negatively affect your performance / get your bonus taken away.

Start taking comp days. Have to come in on a Saturady? Automatic 3-day weekend next week when you don't show up on Friday!

In all this the dinosaurs don't do any weekend work, all they do is show up, talk all day, leave and enjoy life, collect the pay check of 2 or 3 grade 5 employees. Dinosaurs RULE

That's unfair to expect you to be flexible with your time, yet they will nitpick over whether you badge in or not on the weekday
