How bad does one have to be at their job to get fired? If someone is getting their stuff done, generally in line with expectations but that someone doesn’t really fit in with the popular crowd, could they get fired.

I have seen a layoff with only one person before. She was good at what she did, but let it get to her head and started hoarding critical work, then got overwhelmed and had a stack of very visible projects months behind schedule. Outside of that, seems like you have to steal, harass or bribe to actually get fired.
Too bad you can't fire anyone for causing MDT stock to fall
@hw It can be used as a tool for this reason, but many times good but non critical employees can be let go for budgetary reasons using a RIF.
@ga
Sounds like RIF is designed to get rid of unproductive workers, incompetent employees and low performers without the paperwork. RIF = Losers. Is this true?
When I was a manager at Medtronic I put an employee on a PIP. I required them to report out every detail of their daily activities in writing. They were on 90 day probation and had to stop the behavior for which they were put on the PIP and satisfy all of their other job duties as expected.
The person knew the game, and once their probation period was over, and they were not under the shadow of scrutiny of the PIP, the behavior gradually returned.
There was a RIF several months later and that gave me the opportunity to lay them off. Medtronic is way too lenient and tolerant of bad behavior. I think it is fear of legal repercussions by not covering all bases.
I know a handful, majority were blatant violations of the code of conduct.
Fabrizio got fired
MDT does fire people, I've seen plenty of folk get fired for thief of time, workday, RTO and clock punch's. Others get moved around for a while, then RIF'd or Fired for performance reasons.

You don’t get fire at Medtronic. You get RIFed at Medtronic and you have to be bad for at least 5 years before getting RIFed unless you are really horrible.
@ab I have yet to see a checkbox employee walked even after a PIP. I concluded it is a waste of time and effort.
Yes, Medtronic does fire people. Generally there is a process (Performance Improvement Plan or PIP) that puts in place clear, written, short term expectations that need to be met in order to avoid termination. I am aware of individuals that have been placed on a PIP and have successfully remained employed.
