Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

How should I handle 8-hour requirement - please advise

I haven't discussed this with my manager yet so would be grateful for input or info anyone has on policy. Here's my situation:

  • I work East Coast hours from West Coast (CA)
  • I have worked 6am (and sometimes 5am) to 8am from home, then train into the office (I don't own a car...takes about 40 minutes each way).
  • I do not work with anyone else in my office...I spend my day on Teams meetings or doing my work.
  • I go home at 2pm or 3pm, depending when I started in the morning.

Am I now supposed to haul my bu†† downtown at 4:15am to get my 8 hours in the office? The trains don't even run then! I'm not buying a car just to satisfy this. Honestly, the absurdity of all this is what bothers me the most.

Right now, I'm planning to my boss that he's going to lose access to my work and contacting me until 9am Pacific time. Many of my team and project-related calls fall before that time, so they can either allow me to continue working the way I do or lose my participation in various routines, ability to answer questions and fix stuff...I'm stumped.

Just work east coast or central. Most of the people I have worked with are keeping the same schedule as their peers

@e1 - why wouldn't they "allow" it? What is the f-ing magic of working an 8-hr day in your actual location?

So, I ask you again kind sir/madam: Why would they allow it?

B/c I was that f-ng great. That's why. "indispensable", "technical knowledge no one here has any more", "great relationships with LOB execs", "dependable", "100% no fail rate"

But enough about me, I could go on and on.

The reality is the role I had should have been based in London or NYC (trading), but I was that F-ing great, they were thrilled to accommodate my choice of permanent livng location on the West Coast.

So yea, I loved my job, so I got my azz up outta bed nearly every day at 3:30/4am and logged on. Some days I got to sleep "late" til 6:30am.

My manager (and his manager) did not care as long as the work got done (flawlessly, I might add) and everything I did pleased the 8 LOB execs. (yea, that senior, they all know me)

If you are truly exceptional, sometimes your repuation precedes you and you do get "special" accommodation. But you better be that darn good.

Now, when -- on top of all that -- they require my azz to be seated for an ADDITIONAL 8 hrs in a location where I have absolutely nothing in common and no overlapping responsibilities with others in my immediate zip code, I said "no thx" and resigned.

After I left, my duties were split across FOUR people (on top of their other duties, which I feel badly about, but after all, that is the BofA Way).

So there is their magical Cost Savings. Shareholders and Bank Analysts Rejoice!

Meanwhile, I now get to sleep in until a luxurious 7-8am.

(so was I offended at your snarky comment? you bet.)

@bs bofa is filled with b2 and b3 byochs. They make this place the miserable he**hole it is. Wonder how so many with the same personality and iq level end up where they are?! Hmmmm something to ponder on

Keep doing what your doing. They don't have an office time tracking mechanism (yet anyways)

Why 9a PT and not 8a or 8:40a PT? I
Work 8:30a-5p and have a 50 min commute. I plan accordingly and leave home at 7:40am. No issue.

You simply work 9am to 5pm your time zone and don't care about the consequences. The answer is this obvious.

@e1 Yeah, it says a lot that we're surprised when professionals are treated like professionals and common sense prevails.

@OP I am surprised your LOB allows you work east coast hours on the west coast and LOG in at home first then go to work.

@a5 (and OP) - it's not up to your Manager alone. I am certain they would want to keep you in place. I have a similar arrangement (based in CA, work East Coast hours + London, which often means a 3:30am start time, and like you, those days I clock out by 2pm PDT. ugh)

While my direct manager is supportive, HIS manager is a 100%-Compliant-Or-Else A-hole. (She's a total level B2 Byoch, who only cares about looking pristine and superior to her fellow B2 peers).

So, while my manager is supportive, he is a wu-s and has no b@lls to stand up to his She-byoch boss.

I handed in my notice. Many eyebrows raised, but the horrible hours are affecting my health (lack of sleep and f-ed up circadian rhythm will do that). I am fortunate to have enough saved that I can do this, and fully understand not everyone can. My heart breaks for what this company (which used to be Great!) has morphed in to. (so in my case, their strategy to work us all out and get us to quit actually worked. Score for the Boston Mafia yet again! I am beyond even caring at this point. Not how I wanted to go out, but here we are. They don't have to pay me any severance and can brag about their "Winning" Strategy and Expense Reductions in the Q3 Investor Analyst call. yay them)

I hope your manager is stronger than mine, and I encourage OP to follow @a5's advice to not get passive aggressive or threatening. Just raise it candidly and directly in a goodwill effort to seek his/her advice. If they are one of the few "good" managers, they will advocate for you and arrive at a suitable compromise.

Cheering you on from the sideline and wishing you a positive outcome.

Hang in there. Lord knows they sure don't make it easy.

I would probably email your manager this question and ask if he/she wants you to shift your working hours to PDT to be able to meet this requirement, or if there is something else that can be done. I would want the response in writing. I might call HR help desk to find out if your manager has the ability/authority to approve.

Just let your manager know the situation and ask what adjustment he/she may want you to make. I would suggest avoiding any potential passive aggressive approach when you do, and just lay out the facts. Here is what I am doing today, does this work? If not please help me find a viable solution.

@OP A reasonable manager will allow you to keep doing what you're doing. So it really depends on whether or not your manage is a mo--n or an intelligent person.

Hop the first train you can, work eight hours, go home. It’s not rocket science.
