Managers know who's dependable, who consistently delivers, and who the team relies on. Yet some of the people who get let go are exactly those employees. It makes me wonder whether the decisions are made by people looking at spreadsheets instead of the actual work.

The entire comms department is in shambles, both Krista (and her subordinates that have zero clue about communications) and Stanky need to be exited. 5 different business areas doing the exact same thing.
When's the last time culture or even a MISSION was mentioned? A joke.
I have noticed the majority of workers (craft and management) have already reached retirement age. Tons of boomers! I think the company would like to get rid of them, but it would look too bad. So, they just choose the next group (50+), ensuring they never make the same mistake again of having so many workers who need to go home already.
Layoffs are MBA driven. MBAs are taught to measure the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
The best employees are also the most expensive, usually. The issue here is the headcount gap that lies between "great service" and "good enough service." Leadership has lowered the bar on "good enough" to "works most of the time in profitable markets". We can do it that badly with far fewer people who are far less effective.
"He doesn't like me going out early because i need to get my kids to school."
This should have been questioned. Dropping kids off at school is not a valid use of formal caregiver. #COBC
I got let go because my manager doesnt understand being me as a father. He questioned my caregiver leave. He doesnt like me going out early because i need to get my kids to school.
I never had pending at work and always on top of it. Oh well, its actually a good call because i spend more time with them. Broke but surviving happily.
Compensation level is also considered. A to of overpaid managers are still on payroll
Executive leadership recognized that an overabundance of bootlickers on staff leads to sub-optimal results. Some workforce reductions were implemented to optimize that ratio.
Hope this helps.
