Thread regarding Canon Inc. layoffs

As a current Canon employee, what would you advise a potential candidate looking at job postings?

What are your concerns? What do you see in the future for Canon? Do you think there will be layoffs coming?

Message to both prospective applicants and customers: Canon C-suiters and their bootlickers that enable a dysfunctional workplace: this company is a toxic waste dump. Avoid it.

Recently, someone reached out to me and asked about an open position.

I told them to apply and that some time with Canon still looks good on the resume.

But I also informed him of the train wreck of the last few years, and the blatant wide spread corporate discrimination of Americans vs the favoritism towards ex-pats.

For new applicants, Canon should be a short term bridge to a better organization. It’s no longer a great company where an American can build a corporate career.

Here's simple advice: avoid applying for any job at Canon USA. It's run by soulless ghouls.

More like making working conditions worse than they are in the HOPES employees will quit so the company doesn't have to pay unemployment. Can you say constructive discharge? Meaning, a case can be made that the employer made life miserable for the employee.

@h8 Proves how short-sighted the C-suiters from Tokyo are. Zero concept of American culture. Their top-down, slow bureaucratic mentality will not ever work with the American workforce. They expect employees to be quiet and not challenge them. Well, this is America, and folks are independent and will not conform to a rigid climate. The only place that comes close to that is a lifer in the prison system.

@bh And management would find a way not to pay you. A predatory environment that thrives on instilling fear and enjoying it. The definition of a degenerate sociopathics management culture.

@kr That is when you document every single email and conversation. I know folks who are doing this and it can fill a book.

And when they add more to your plate that people higher levels than you previously manage and you inquire about advancing they will find the pettiest reason to write you up and not give you a bonus or raise while you still continue to do the tasks. The whole company’s miserable. I don’t know why anyone would want to work at Canon!

I would say this. The company has spent the last two years driving pricing up to ensure you have discount to win deals. The discounting will only pay you a 2% override which is far less comp than people made on the same deal years ago. This is a greedy Japanese company who could care less about the American employee. Canon USA is more like Canon FU USA these days.

It’s only a matter of time before people leave. The job market will turn and people will leave.

I worked for Canon for about 8 years and left on my own. It was the worst company I worked for. My office was dominated by one gender who would have emotional outburst often. Seeing a manger cry once a month is pathetic. The only people who got promoted were the friends/gossip buddies of the senior manager. I did enjoy the professional development of working with the expats. One of my supervisors would communicate with them by speaking broken english. It was a very bad place to work. Since leaving, I make a MUCH better liviing and have yet to see anyone cry.

@bg The printing industry is not the problem. Current Canon management is it. Heck, go into a Walmart or Best Buy sometime. To date, I have not seen a Canon camera anywhere. Again, crony, dysfunctional management. And don't think potential job seekers don't read these posts. In fact, they should. The best and the brightest will go elsewhere.

Let’s start from the beginning, the “training” you will receive is pathetic. There is no carefully planned development program. You might get a meeting here and there with somebody from your team, who will just dump all kinds of random info and terminology at you with no structure at all. There are no Beatles here, nobody wants to hold your hand. I’ve been with the company for a few years now, and most of what I know was self-taught. In a big company, you need to look out for yourself. I’ve complained to management about how there is an opportunity for training improvements, but they just give you the “Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’ll see what we can do”. Although I dominate and shine over other team members, I have not received a promotion, despite having one dangled over my head by my direct manager for almost a year now. I have not been given any opportunities to learn new facets of the business. I do the same told cr@p day after day, and quite frankly I’m getting tired of it. No career progression. Annual raises don’t keep up with inflation.

Executive management is flat out incompetent and have no charisma. They have shown their true colors over the last several years. Multiple rounds of layoffs, petty policies to demoralize those remaining, poor decision-making, i.e. Google Workspsce, no understanding or appreciation for the front line workers in the field (sales / service) or office administrative positions. No, a doughnut once or twice a year is not sufficient. You are just a number on a spreadsheet to them. Productivity and profitability metrics are all they care about.

@OP, here’s the reality, if the employer is offering employees thousands of dollars to recommend new employees, I would not recommend anyone.

Unless you're in medical tech or maybe marketing for the camera division, stay away. The print division is dying, and pretty much all current employees are extremely unhappy and it's trending downward still.
