Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Chief Innovation Spectator(s)

Some leaders are remarkably skilled at standing near innovation and taking credit for the temperature.

They wander through the work, ask carefully rehearsed questions, nod with executive concern, repeat whatever language is currently fashionable, and then disappear before anything difficult requires courage, judgment, or accountability.

Their greatest innovation is turning self-promotion into a full-time position.

While talented people build, test, fail, solve, and push through resistance, these leaders focus on the truly important work: remaining visible, politically protected, and conveniently adjacent to every success.

No meaningful decisions. No barriers removed. No risks taken. Just endless positioning dressed up as leadership.

It is an impressive performance, really.

To contribute so little while appearing so important requires a very specific kind of talent. Real innovators leave behind better products, stronger teams, and meaningful progress.

Performers leave behind meeting invites, talking points, and the lingering question of what exactly they do all day.

@j8 Imagine anonymously bi--hing on an anonymous website about someone else being anonymous, and still believing you’re the brave one in the story. That level of stupidity paired with zero self-awareness is almost impressive. You didn’t “speak truth”; you threw a tantrum because a stranger downvoted your bullsh-t. But congratulations, you’ve officially become the human equivalent of a reply-all email nobody wanted.

Hilarious that you get presented with a long list of the innovations coming from Innovation, and then you down vote the truth. Convenient. Don’t bother to own your role and find truth, just keep bi--hing on an anonymous website. Great work.

@e7 MIND product is constantly sold out, that’s not too shabby. Innovation often doesn’t get credit and most are ok with that, but many inline products have things straight out of LeBron; new foam formulations used every day, airsole unit innovations (more work than anyone realizes), athlete product that had to go through years of revision to be effective, textile work that is used in many silos. Having someone from inline try to explain something to you that you directly worked on in innovation a few times makes you realize innovation has a marketing and comms problem.

Some projects are novel and self-sparked but there are a lot of them that inline asked for.

Not saying innovation doesn’t need change, it does. It’s bloated and not nimble. The VPs trying to build empires are irritating and not helpful. There are hard-workers, some waiting for the package instead of retiring, and slackers, just like anywhere in the berm. Many in LeBron also want change, let’s not make it us vs. them. A shakeup would be good, but to think nothing is going to market from innovation means you’re just not paying attention or doing your homework.

There’s plenty coming from innovation. Radical Air. The “premium” Pegs and Vomeros everyone loves. FlyWeb. Air Apparel at the Olympics. HyperIce partnership. World Cup jersey materials Sustainable materials. The new Mercurial boot with the air bag. And more to come.

Just a matter of categories and product creation deciding to go further with it or continue to be scared of their shadows.
