Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Quality department - Florida market I’m stressed! Help me decide

I work in the Quality Department at Centene in Florida. Have you guys heard anything about what’s going on with the Quality team? Our Senior Director is stepping down, and I’ve noticed a lot of changes lately, especially with our metrics.

We’re now expected to abstract 50 charts a day because upper management wants to see higher production numbers. I honestly feel like a robot. I’ve been working past my scheduled hours without getting paid just to keep up with the workload. I didn’t sign the VSP, but I’m starting to think about leaving if I continue getting fails and having to work past 5 PM just to meet expectations.

The frustrating part is that I’m meeting productivity and I’m actually one of the top producers on my team, but my accuracy has been dropping because of all the changes and the pressure to rush through charts. It feels like no one really cares about the quality of the work anymore as long as the numbers are there.

We also have around 30 people from QI leaving, and none of us really know what other changes are coming. At this point, I’m feeling drained. I’ve never felt this way working at Centene before.

My accuracy has been dropping, and honestly, I’m getting to the point where I don’t even care because the expectations don’t feel fair. If my manager tells me I need to bring my accuracy up, I’m going to be pi---d. How can you tell me to improve my accuracy while also dumping a huge number of charts on me that require careful review, but expecting me to rush through them just to hit a number?

Is this a reasonable reason to start looking for another job? I don’t know if I’m overreacting, but this has become exhausting.

If you want to keep your job stop working off the clock. Many hourly employees are doing it but as soon as management or compliance is aware that A person is doing it, that'll be an automatic termination if not a written warning (or Last Chance Agreement). Document any communication with your people leader or HR about the unrealistic expectations. Start a paper trail. Start looking for a new job. Whatever you do, just stop working off the clock.

@bq FYI It’s illegal to work off the clock at Centene. If you guys utilize the Pega system it captures everything from the time you clock in and clock out. I understand trying to meet that won't help if they discover you’re working off the clock.

I work in Quality at Corporate with several of the HEDIS teams; I could have sworn I heard that they are planning to automate some part of manual chart review (didn't hear anything about a timeline). but they would still need to make sure the abstraction was accurate in overread though.

asking for 50 charts a day is ridiculous; even for the most seasoned people who are well versed in the measures. do they not understand a chart can be PAGES long and you have to READ every SINGLE thing?

do what you can and start looking elsewhere. I saw that Molina had some abstraction positions posted. you know that you're not "failing". I guarantee they are going to start moving to having more contractors doing abstraction while they figure out the automation process.

start logging off at 5pm.

Stop caring, work at a pace that is good for you and don't worry about it. Definitely stop working off the clock.

@bq I don’t have a choice. It’s not the best practice but in order to meet numbers I need to abstract 50-60 charts per day. Some of the measures are difficult and take time. If I don’t stay over time I’m sc--wed. When they present my numbers , vice president will be upset and make this a big deal. I’m stuck and waiting for the next QI meeting to see what will the changes be and who we will be reporting to.

@OP The CM dept has become the same way. They only care about quantity not quality. CMs are required to make 351 calls per month. No matter what. And the phone system doesn’t accurately count the calls. They know this. Doesn't matter. They're looking for reasons to fire people. No severance that way. Centene has turned into a grimy and toxic company.

@b5

Im thinking about it … the whole team is upset. We have two people leaving who signed the VSP and one on maternity leave. I can’t imagine the amount of work that will be piled on top of us due to those people leaving. 3 people on our team have a low accuracy but we are producing as much charts as possible to get through the bulk load since our numbers is being looked at weekly by upper management. We don’t even know who’s going to to be managing the QI team since so many senior leaders are leaving soon. Maybe because we are approaching the end of the year with all these changes , they probably won’t even look at our numbers much who knows but I’m definitely scared for next year with all the set changes and crazy numbers we need to meet. They keep telling us that other corporate members have been abstracting 50 charts per day but they don’t understand that just to look at one lengthy immunization record where we need to find 10 immunizations separately, it takes like 30-40 min. Imagine being DUMPED 50 plus charts and having to rush those in a day. I just don’t get what they expect us to do. They think we are robots. Now I’m seeing the fails coming in. It’s not fair. WE HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT IT TO OUR MANAGER! She’s scared too. She’s just telling me “good job “ and not really caring much about my concerns. She sounds iffy. I kept telling her from the beginning I don’t mind being given charts but please don’t give me the same charts that’s uncomfortable for me because I might make mistakes with the pressure on top of me. She didn’t care ! She just dumped them because we had to get through the “bulk.”

@OP you are NOT overreacting. They are managing people out. Document everything!!!
Let them let you go so you can get unemployment maybe or a layoff severance at least to get something out of it.
Contact a lawyer it's worth it. I already did. There is one who handled a case for an employee here with the exact same scenario as you are going through and won!
You are not alone. Prayers 🙏
