@j3 there won't be any demand for tech labor by the time we fix the education system. If genAI is good for one thing, it's writing, testing, and reviewing code. Demand will fall by a factor of at least 100 by 2030.
Good. I've never seen a less efficient technology organization. Maybe they'll start canceling the 5 year rebadge contracts, too. What mo--n decided to lock in tech labor spend at a time when Claude Code can do a better job than our half-qualified contractors? No serious company is expecting anything but a decline in tech labor demand. This is not a serious company.

I'm getting pretty burnt on this. I almost just want them to do it at this point even in this hellish job market. It's been like this for years now with the RIFs and the constant innuendo and "will they? won't they?" I do a lot of work but for sure it's fungible. No illusions there. If ever this was a stratagem to get people on their toes and pushing hard to make sure they're not on the chopping block that gain is gone I think. Over time the stress burnout from that gets too excessive and you just kind of start hoping they pull the trigger rather than just do another suspense on you. It's not great how they do this with the tension and the waves.

You got to be kidding me. 286 is probably for a year. The entire IT is full of H1Bs. In my group we have about 15 H1Bs in staff of 35. The management is also non native born and prefers H1Bs, and don’t forget the secondary employment through companies like Deloitte UST, full of H1Bs.
@ha imo offshoring is just globalized business. It's limited that you can do. USA sells goods internationally and has US experts hired by different international companies working remotely. H1B even if limited is the weird thing here. Offshore and remote is just called a global economy, even when it hurts.

Many Indian IT associates fill the offices of Elevance Health. They may not be H1-Bs, but they definitely have the accents of their homeland.
@dq No one uses H1Bs anymore. Everyone keeps complaining about H1Bs, like people hear it on Fox News and they just repeat is ad nauseam.

286…That is the total number of 2026 H1Bs Elevance Health has. Elevance Health also has 100k employees. 286 doesn’t even register, that’s a rounding error.
These companies are probably so happy everyone is complaining and fixated on H1Bs, when the real problem is offshoring. The current administration has also talked about H1Bs and cracking down on them with $100k fees. It’s all political theater because their supporters are too d-mb to realize they’re not doing anything about offshoring.
Lots of timelines extended & projects on hold or pause so not surprised- drumbeat - AI AI! we do have to admit lots of inconsistencies just to get the work done. But there is no quick fix & AI is not magic.
What American IT workers are left at EH to rif? I thought they had already been thrown out of their jobs and replaced with offshore resources....
