Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

AI bubble about to burst- BNY losing interest?

We have all noticed, including people in neighboring departments, that all the fire and fury about AI back in the Spring has disappeared. Also, many national articles about AI buyer’s remorse and people who were laid off being rehired; many errors with AI; AI not reaping any real benefits. Also- I have heard that part 3 of that AI test has been moved back to next year (the one where they want a 6-page thing). AI=dot com bo-m and bust?

@k2 Why talk about it if RV's already mastered it! We already know he's fluent in AI gab speak, sends LAR before AI conferences and finally he rates himself an expert with a 9 out of 10 proficiency level. What's left to talk about? Oh wait, he's a regular on CNBC's Mad Money -- there he can tell Jim Cramer new lies about BNY AI usage and training levels (99% are trained and using AI daily!). And how can the RV (or the EC) say anything without trumpeting our Amazing Culture!

C'mon now, let's all stand and give yourselves a round of applause!!
At the count of 3, let's all recite our pillars and principles now... #lifeatBNY & #thrivetogether!

BNY spent their entire yearly AI budget before years end. A common theme with multiple companies during 2026.

Yes, the greater AI talk is all a boondoggle. Data centers that will not be built. Tech that does not deliver. ROI that will never happen.

I think at BNY though, the only reason you see a slowing of AI talk is, they ran out of money for 2026.

I'm concerned with the environmental impact of AI. People have to restrict water use but datacentres don't, thats messed up. Sometimes it feels like we aren't far off life in the movie WALL-E, generating more garbage than the earth can handle, getting fat and glued to screens.

What if all of the data centers are really being built to be used as concentration camps?

Oligarchs see the majority of humanity as being a PITA that they need to do away with. Humans in general to them are too costly, too much of a drain, and aren't of much value to them any more.
The oligarchs probably look at the data-centers-as-work/concentration camps model as an "efficient" way to "solve the problem". It would be easy for the oligarchs to persuede the down and damaged hoi polloi into "work camps" after they've lost their housing en masse due to countless evictions and foreclosures from mass layoffs, and inability to find suitable work, thereafter. It sounds crazy, but what they're doing so far is crazy too...Covid lockdowns, laying off while destroying economies worldwide, intentional overrunning of populations with nefarious hordes whose collective goal is to literally overturn and destroy western civilization...

All of that would continue on in hyperdrive, while layoff after layoff continues, with nest eggs being run through, backup plans exhausted, plan Bs fallen through, no jobs, limited food, health failing, violence and mayhem on the streets with nowhere to turn...people would be desperate to receive any sort of hand-out or "help" to escape that insanity.

So along would come the oligarchs, offering false promises of "peace and safety" to the downtrodden who have no other options at that point. "Here's a nice place where you can live and work, and not have to worry about paying bills! We'll feed you, and provide you with all amenities, so you're comfy cozy! Just sign on the dotted line..."

Right, and computers are only good for games and the internet is only good for flying toasters. Companies like BNY are seeing plenty of benefits from AI and will see HUGE benefits going forward. Despite the lefts war on technology and war on energy...

Hahahahahahahaha yeah.. These awful terrible data centers and the harm they do on green computing. ‘What a world! What a world’
I think we would look great in Flintstones burlap sack outfits with black diamonds on them while eating a brontosaurus burger. For now, we will just have to settle for living like 3rd world people in India while people like Robin destroy the US, UK and Irish job markets.

Not to mention the scourge which data centers have on the environment, and how they are going to be obsolete soon, so their whole point of existing is moot. They are behemoth entities, which pollute land, air, plants, animals, and humans. They emit e-waves which are harmful to health, and which can kiII. They greedily take up resources which are needed for human life (water, electricity, farmland, etc.)

Back in the dawn of the computer era, people thought those huge big IBM computers which were the size of walk-in refrigerators were the latest and greatest. Now you can have 1K times that computing power in one tiny microchip.

Same will happen with all of these data centers they keep building...they'll all be OBSOLETE within just a few short years. And end up being just big toxic pollution monsters, taking up space, and rotting away for nothing. Musk is banking on Starlink to serve as (among other things) built-in data centers, so they can be operating from space, not taking up hundreds of thousands of acres of land here on Earth.

AI=faulty, inhumane, and not in our best interests. It is designed to corral, oppress, and ultimately extinguish human creativity, common sense, and life itself. AI + data centers = The End.

As the Wicked Witch of the West wailed, when she was disintegrating into a steaming puddle of nothing, "What a world...what a world..."

It's not because AI is not efficient... it's because big corporations (although they are screaming about AI everywhere) are the worst worst companies in terms of efficiency to use it. And the reasons are:

  1. You have thousands of people there who earn set salary if they deliver 90%, 100% or 1000%. You will not get paid more if your productivity went 10x or 100x. No one cares to pay more. And if the metrics are set, then bureaucracy and carrot and stick approach will f everything up. (large corporations are mini North Koreas)..

  2. Most work at large corporations are incremental. AI is amazing at delivering groundbreaking stuff on massive scale. For incremental stuff it doesn't have huge advantage. But it gives 1-5 person companies with knowledge how to orchestrate hundreds of agents insane competitive advantage. Corps will feel it in a couple of years, mark my word.

  3. The only way to make more money working for huge corporations are kickbacks (using AI) AI in this case is ALLIndia and con-(sulting) firms like Mkz. The funny/sad part is every single person in the industry knows about this and no one talks about it. Do I see and iceberg in front.. hmm. Then the question becomes... Do managers need to hire some local AI builder who can deliver at 100x or send to India and get kickback. Answer is obvious. That's an addition to completely broken hiring process and clueless HR.

  4. Corporation is not a single entity it's people, single individuals . You ask people to train their AI replacement and do their work at the same time - pay them twice as much. Stop lying to people. We live once and on a little spec of sand dust in the universe.

    1. In a large corporation no one wants to take responsibility. Best solution is to outsource responsibility to companies who don't give a d about the business.

This list can go on and on ....

AI is—-was?—-a propaganda tool for offshoring and the stock market. It’s a fraud. It has been no help to us.

Yes, but RV rates himself a 9 out of 10 in terms of his AI usage. Maybe that's where all this snake oil comes from?!
