Just had a call with my new "leader" at Charter and was told in no uncertain terms "Move to Stamford of you are effectively resigning from the company." Nice right? Alex Taylor cared about one thing and one thing only - building his legacy within the family, regardless of the human capital losses.

@e4 adding - keep in mind, severance is always discretionary as long as its similar "rule" to everyone at given point in time, eg. they don't give Bob severance if he doesn't move but they do give co-worker Jane, in same situation, 8 weeks severance.
Regardless of severance, termination/layoff does give you legal right to unemployment benefits vs voluntary resignation, which does not.
@OP where are you currently located? Atlanta? I thought Atlanta would be ok... at least for now. Smaller offices - I am not surprised as Charter I know is big on ppl being co-located especially with their leaders/managers.
Legally speaking though, I am almost positive that if company requires you to move more than 50(?) miles and you don't or can't reasonably commute, this is considered a layoff, not a resignation and eligible for unemployment and usually severance (I feel like that could be a lawsuit if they are telling you its voluntary resignation instead.... unless of course, you're currently in lower milage from Stamford, then yes, it would be a resignation).
@aq I don't think that is correct. legally, if a company requires you to move more than x miles and you don't, its considered a layoff/termination, not voluntary resignation.
However, ppl should be aware that Charter is very big on ppl being in one of the "major" locations (though per agreement, Atlanta will be one too supposedly) and where ppl's mgrs are so they can be watched and not left to their own devices .
@aq that doesnt sound right, we were told the whole way you could take severance if forced to move.
These are considered voluntary resignations and ineligible for severance.
You get severance if you decline moving to Stamford right?
