TIS Reorg After USUI

Gotta say, the TIS reorg since USUI has been a bit of a gong show. SMT morale seems pretty rough and are already making exits. Even more concerning is that EMT doesn't appear to be on the same page, which makes the whole leadership situation feel pretty shaky. Escalations don't seem to be landing anywhere meaningful. HR doesn't do anything just there to protect the top than to actually uphold any Enbridge values. Just a tough situation all around and hopefully someone figures it out before more folks head for the exit.

@18h What’s there to discuss? The biggest surprise is really how long it took. Not because JG was bad at the job—far from it—but because he had a habit of saying the quiet part out loud. Enbridge likes the idea of everyone having a voice; it is rather less enthusiastic about hearing what some of those voices actually have to say.

JG was responsible for the technology core, which is arguably the strongest part of TIS. He clearly did plenty right. He was also quietly steering issue resolution behind the scenes on many pipeline outage calls. Most people in the business have no idea how much TIS—particularly network and infrastructure—does, at all hours, to keep the operation running.

So SA may have just bought himself a fairly substantial risk ticket. There’s no obvious successor, and this is not a role where you can simply parachute someone in from outside and expect them to understand the technology, the operation and the Enbridge landscape overnight. If the wrong person takes that seat, the consequences will show up in the business long before they show up on an org chart.

JB would be my bet to land it within a few months. But whoever gets it has inherited a much bigger job than the title might suggest.

Surprised nobody talked about JG yet.

@vk Your thoughts sound VERY characteristic of many other organizations within Enbridge. I don’t know the IT side of the business, but I certainly felt like I was reading about my org reading your post! The level of incompetence, kingdom building, and ladder climbing in this company, and the fact that it is allowed to persist is phenomenal!

Anyone know what happened with the TIS INC Director (VR)?
He announced he was leaving and 4 days later was his last day. Pushed out?

@vm Yes, that’s how those director 1:1s went. He made a point of going around and asking the directors for their views. It initially seemed like a positive approach. But, he then went back to EMT and the message was to reduce budgets and the risk of outages, and give more AI to the BUs. Those are the priorities. Not actually improving how the organisation operates or addressing the underlying issues.

And those changes that were announced, that is the re-org. There’s no big bang coming. Just a few changes here and there to absorb some people and layoff a few others.

What re-org? Last week there were like 3 announcements, if this re-org was remotely close those would have waited. This re-org is going to be the biggest let down in history.

Our director stated they had a 1:1 with SA when he first joined TIS and hasn’t even exchanged emails with him since. SA sounded like it was going to be good but where is he spending his time if not finding out what the challenges are.

EMT was hardly a model of collective leadership under BI, but it has become even more fractured since. There is little sense of a leadership team pulling in the same direction and far more evidence of people protecting their own positions and territories.

SA still appears to be finding his feet. The problem is that he seems to be doing it from the balcony rather than the shop floor. He needs to spend less time on AI showcases and board decks and more time with the people who actually run the teams - asking questions, listening, understanding what works, what doesn’t, and where the real opportunities are. Given his operational background, it is particularly surprising that he has yet to grasp the strategic importance of OT and the value it can create for the business.

TL, JG and AS are more focused on managing their own career trajectories than fixing the persistent problems within their respective organizations. The same strengths and weaknesses remain, with little evidence that anyone is prepared to tackle the underlying issues. They won’t fix themselves.

RS and MP appear primarily concerned with protecting their own domains. Their focus seems to be as much on preventing colleagues from interfering as it is on improving the organization.

JB is largely occupied managing the risks the BUs are creating with their latest AI initiatives, while presumably keeping an eye on his own next move.

The most concerning part is what happens after USUI. There appears to be very little thought being given to the people and organizational capability that will be left behind. Too much of the leadership focus is on careers, positions and protecting turf, and not enough on the organization they are supposed to be leading.

Once USUI is finished, I suspect that will become very clear.

Some people wave goodbye to others while quietly making sure no one remembers what really happened. Real nice and polite, sweet as maple syrup. We know damage control when we see it bud. This isn't our first winter.

@cs you are rooting for someone to lose their job? Wouldn’t want to work beside a person like that.

It’s the best thing possible. TIS needs to be gutted. No more tail wagging the dog. That’s the mandate the business has given and many of us are glad to see that it’s being carried out.
