Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Any updates on this?

Yes, there will be layoffs but no material planning has started. The metric which is bugging the ELT is that Seagate's opex is about $100M less per quarter than WD. They have structural advantages such as operating in N. Ireland and MN but nonetheless, WD will cut staff to try to match them.

Any new info?

@1vc While I can't confirm the percentage, layoffs are starting to be planned. Just like the January layoff, this one has a project code name. It will happen before the end of the calendar year.

@4ph fun fact. Her father worked at WDC and before that he worked at STX. History reverses itself? He was also the channel chief and a pretty good tennis player, also a damn good man.

My latest update: platforms is toast. It is just a matter of when not if. WD is simply now a cash cow and the bean counters are in charge. Good luck to all.

A shock to the system is coming once we know how many took the package. WD is a slow moving dinosaur.

An offer was made for platform group sale according to my sources but rejected by Irving.

There is a power struggle at Senior Director levels. I predict a lot of turnover is coming and jobs chopped in the US.

@3bn What has the new management accomplished so far? The stock price is up due to demand and not because of anything done by the new leaders. On the contrary, the new appraisal policy will hurt teamwork and joy of solving issues together in a collaborative environment. Infusing fear in employees works only in short term.

@27m its an Asian company now. Did you see the quarterly meeting ? Every executive but Ahmed was in Singapore. Ahmed was left back in San Jose and asked by Irving Tan why HAMR was behind schedule. Ahmed looked scared.

Early retirements, reorgs and more restructuring ahead. The AI bo-m feels like it is succumbing.

Is the business model of hard drives similar to Amazon? I think in hard drives we need years of engineering as well as technical knowledge. WD always laid of people who were not contributing much but this strategy of supposedly trying divide and conquer may not lead to CONQUEST!!!

Layoffs are coming. Bottom 10% of performers will be cut. Amazon culture has arrived. Badge in and work hours are being tracked it AI.
