Thread regarding J&J (Johnson & Johnson) layoffs

April/May Layoffs 2026

The soft layoffs in innovative medicine continue, and many of us are starting to question the criteria behind who is being let go. Employees who consistently come into the office three days a week, contribute meaningfully, and do their jobs well are being impacted, while others who rarely show up and contribute little seem to remain untouched.

It’s difficult not to notice how political the environment appears to have become. At times, it feels as though if someone in leadership doesn’t personally favor you, your position may already be at risk. That perception alone is concerning. It keeps repeating and everyone sees it.

I simply wish professionalism, maturity, and fairness carried more weight in these decisions. People should not feel that their livelihood is tied to office politics, personal insecurities, or whether they are personally liked by leadership.

Let’s be honest — some of these leaders are simply not qualified for the roles they hold. Titles and positions do not automatically make someone an effective leader. True leadership requires competence, accountability, emotional intelligence, fairness, and the ability to develop and support strong teams. Unfortunately, many employees are witnessing the opposite.

Too often, decisions appear to be driven by favoritism, office politics, personal comfort, or insecurity rather than actual performance and contribution. Strong employees who bring value, experience, and consistency are being pushed out, while individuals with the right relationships or visibility continue to advance despite limited impact. That creates frustration, distrust, and a toxic work culture.

What’s even more concerning is that many organizations claim to value innovation, collaboration, and talent retention, yet they continue to lose some of their most capable people because leadership lacks the maturity or confidence to manage high-performing individuals effectively. Great leaders build strong teams around them. Insecure leaders often view strong talent as competition.

At some point, innovative medicine has to ask themselves why morale is declining, why turnover is increasing, and why employees no longer trust leadership. The issue is not always the workforce. Sometimes the issue is the people making the decisions

More complaints about Julia Brodsky. That she is bringing all these random people from Novartis and giving them titles and responsibilities which they are not trained for (Directors, Senior Directors etc.). I don't understand what is going on, and why she is allowed to continue. She's been busy pushing out legit R&D people out of the team she inherited, and replacing them with all these random blue-collared kooks who have nothing to do with R&D. Remaining team members have been complaining that the team is no longer recognizable.

Such a shame that the VPs from the TAs and other Data Sciences teams, won't escalate and get her pushed out asap.

This is game over. SMH!

@7dg Take that back. No background in customer satisfaction, but a background in ClinOps, through and through. Still doesn't make it right that she is 'leading' R&D Data Science Strategy and R&D Data Products now.

@4zn If layoffs are not drive by performance, and there is very little internal talent left (because the 'leaders' are threatened by competency and therefore lay-off the good-ones), how can the culture not be toxic?

Simply look at each one of the VPs in Data Sciences. Some of these clown women don't even understand the science, but are leading R&D Data Science.

@4zn JNJ is so toxic. Between cafepharma, Reddit, and this forum, it doesn’t take long to realize that most leaders will cover up problems and target those who don’t fall in line. Cronyism and inky those who are sycophants for their leader survive. As such, they have struggled for decades - lagging many benchmarks and peers.

It is indeed true that J&J is a highly relationship driven company where competence is not the most important thing. I would not necessary say it is toxic to the core but layoffs are definitely not driven by performance.

This culture is very prevalent in Data Sciences led by Belen and her VPs from what I've seen. What is worse, the TA leadership sits in their own siloes, are very under-qualified themselves or are massively timid to influence clearing out the mess that continues to be propagated by Belen and her VPs. Data Sciences at J&J needs to fold. The stupid shadow IT org at J&J is an enormous waste of resources. They are hiring blue-collared people with no real scientific or technical backgrounds to Director and Senior Director roles (personal favorites of these VPs of course).

J&J is extremely toxic.
