Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

When does the hiring freeze end?

Had an great internal transfer lined up and then this "non-financial non-budgeting" induced hiring freeze. If they couldn't figure out the RTO space needs and lift the hiring freeze sooner, will seriously consider external opportunities, as where I currently am is a sick place.

So, HRs in the know, when will the hiring freeze end?

@OP I had an internal transfer lined up recently. HR confirmed they were drafting my offer letter, but then the classic delays started creeping in. My expected start date came and went.
Now I’m being told that while my offer "technically still stands," there is no space so they have zero timeline on when I can actually transition—meaning it could take months, or might not be resolved until 2027.

From floor chatter and talking to peers, this isn’t isolated to the team I am in and applied to—multiple departments are hitting this same brick wall with internal moves.

At this point, it feels like stealth headcount reduction. Stringing people along until they get frustrated and voluntarily leave seems like the unspoken strategy so they don't have to do formal layoffs or pay severance.

Is anyone else seeing this exact playbook across other divisions right now? Already polishing my resume and applying elsewhere, but wanted to sanity-check how widespread this is.

Contractor here told by my (friendly) manager that as of now, my contract, actually all contractors in our domain for that matter, won't be renewed beyond end of year. Though there is a chance of reversal "in the fall" after review. My manager has been urging me to convert to full time for months and she's visibly upset. I'm in enterprise tech.

Ha not until they figure out seating. Seems like they still have no clue how we’re all going to fit and park.

you should have heard by now if you're not being extended.

What is up with the Sept contract renewals? I did hear another hiring freeze for any new roles they are looking to fill. It was frozen then unfrozen then refrozen again last week. What a sh---y roller coaster to be on. If they are going to cut us the least they can do is give us a heads up!! This place su-ks.

so, if contractors aren't being extended, we're essentially lame duck employees just running our time time out. Why should we bother going into the office if it doesn't really matter anymore. Other than possibly not being rehired in the future, what reason is there to continue going into the office. If I'm not extended, I really don't see myself ever going back again anyhow The bullsh-ttery is not worth it.,

@eg Hmmm, that's not what we're being told. Not sure where you're getting your information from but that isn't the message being communicated.

AI zero-day threats are rising fast.
Return-to-office mandates won’t keep people here—they’ll simply leave for remote or hybrid roles.
The nanny state is in full effect. They’re beating us down daily while demanding we staff and fund programs with no actual people left to do the work.
When open-weight models catch up and none of the necessary prep work has been done, we’ll be a big, soft target. This all fantasy anyways with no real substance.

@cm+1kzf1mcqs contractors will be renewed and in fact contractors are very safe right now because if a contractor is fired the manager does NOT get the open req back. Managers are holding on to bad contractors because they will lose precious headcount

Tell your internal candidate what happened. If they are like me, with the freeze, giving up on internal now and applying externally

There is an exception process but unfortunately HR does not yet know how to invoke it.
