Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Does Dell really need mangers long term?

AI is eventually going to expose just how much middle management is basically Outlook, Excel, and “just circling back.”

If software can track performance, forecast numbers, flag problems, summarize activity, and send updates upstairs, it gets harder to justify paying someone $200K to schedule meetings, read a dashboard, and ask, “Any blockers?”

They need managers to kiss director's a$$. They need directors to kiss VP's a$$. And so forth all the way to the top.
No, they do not need managers to actually lead people, develop talent, or voice employees' concerns to upper management.

No. They do not need "managers managing the management of how managers manage" anymore. - paraphrased quote from Zuckerberg actually.

Lean companies with very little layers of managers is the trend.

@fh And you still don’t know the difference between “you’re” and “your”.

All managers do is roll up numbers, enforce metrics, and watch YouTube.

Most are unable to speak to the business.

Looks like you've got plenty of untouched accounts, son. Get back to work! While you do that, I'm off to touch some managers. Heh.

Totally. Same reason I stopped going to doctors— Claude gives me a diagnosis in two seconds anyway

I wrote a report about this about three years ago when Dell started pushing every one to become acquainted with the basics of AI.
If you’re job just consisted of collating spreadsheets, summarizing and then passing up to the next level of management (which describes most directors) then you’re function will soon be obsolete.

My boss said it was terrible and said I (with an MBA) obviously did not understand the purpose of management. I rewrote it a bit and passed it in as an assignment in my AI in management class and and got an A.

@OP

I agree. If all you are doing is tracking things, updates etc., you don't need them. Where you do need them is when there is a problem. You need someone with experience, knowledge of said problem, confidence to help you solve the problem etc. For more experienced employees, they can do it themselves. The problem is with new personnel. That's when you need the experience. This all falls on deaf ears because all companies are racing towards AI. Companies will figure this out later. The name of the game now is AI and how many people they can replace with AI.

@a9 I would say they don't even have that. Dell has incompetent dolts managing technologies they've never even heard of, much less have experience in. The entire company is wrought with nepotism, brown -nosers, and favoritism at the management layer.

Dell needs leaders. They have politicians and financiers.
