Questions About COBRA

I’m being RIF’d September 4 and I’m also due later that same month 😭 Has anyone dealt with COBRA through Centene? I’m wondering how enrollment works, whether there could be any lapse in coverage, and how I would add my newborn after delivery. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

@OP Even though your RIF date is September 4th, your current health insurance with the company is good through September 30. You should receive COBRA insurance information in the mail shortly after 9/4/26. Be mindful of the date posted on the envelope, as you have so many days to sign up for COBRA insurance. I also recommend looking at marketplace health insurance (www.healthcare.gov), which I think you can only apply after the window period for COBRA decision. Please note that COBRA insurance is only for 18 months max.

As long as under cobra for month of delivery, will be covered. Now after child is born look into Medicaid or Child Health plus to cover past 30 days. As soon as child is born, reach out to marketplace in your state or if they have a federal marketplace, as your child can be covered with Medicaid or CHP depending on income !! Just do not do cobra for your newborn

@OP I am sorry you have to deal with this. Not sure how your financial picture looks but maybe look into Medicaid for baby ? Cobra after they stop paying is so damn expensive I think the baby is covered under yours for 30 days ? Good luck and bless u and your baby

Check the policy and with HR but 99% sure that benefits run through the last day of the last month your employed so in theory COBRA should start 10/1

@OP I was on FMLA and was on COBRA for 12 weeks. It is through Lincoln Financial. I had to set up an account and auto pay from my bank every two weeks. If you have not gotten info yet on COBRA, just reach out to HR and/or Lincoln on next steps. Best of luck on all!
