Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Thoughts on RTO

How do you think this whole RTO debacle will go? Do you think it’s going to crash and burn and Fidelity will admit their mistakes and return to at least some WFH time? Or do you think they will force us to put up with the terrible conditions until enough people quit that will satisfy their reduced headcount need? I need to see a brighter side to all of this nonsense.

@jg - makes no sense why they would sell. They are greedy and want infinite wealth. They won’t sell in my lifetime. I don’t care if the sell or not, but this seems like a conspiracy theory.

@gf - just because you worked 25 years there and have no opportunities doesn’t mean other people are stuck. No one is irreplaceable, but when you lose a critical person the pain is felt for months by the people doing the work. management never feels it.

It's clear to me that this is all an effort to clean house before the sale. And this place won't be sold in one large transaction but in pieces: Capital Markets to XYZ Company , Clearing & Custody to ABC Company, etc. Abby may keep a couple of select business lines that interest her, but I really think the end of this 'family enterprise' is coming in 2027.

@OP Employers especially large ones like Fidelity will not really feel any impact if there is some natural attrition due to RTO. Employees due to their NEED for a paycheck and benefits will just have to comply. The employer holds the cards, it would take a mass exodus to have management realize they crossed a line that is impacting the business. Anyone who thinks it would be hard to replace them needs to wake up- there are 10 people ready to take your spot. You are just a number literally A**, there's a newer A# in line for your job.
I don't agree with this forced RTO and the obvious issues that the sites are experiencing but no one said management had common sense. The culture has eroded and that's a shame but it is what it is.

Fastest way to get more people to leave. There will be an increase once people get their bonus. By design. Unhappy? Look for another job.

I think it will be OK and the folks that leave are the ones that some how think they are irreplaceable. Here is the rub, NO ONE IS and if you think you are, you should look somewhere else. Just because you have been here 25 years does not mean a lot, others can easily take your spot without blinking and I think that is a HUGE issues at Fidelity. FAR too many have been told they are 'special' and they simply are not.

They will do what they’ve continued to do the last 5 years: Not give an absolute fock about how anyone feels about decisions they make. They will say “synergy/energized/collaboration” but really mean “Comply or have your bonus zerod out or be fired”. Simple as that.

I don’t know, but I find it infuriating to see senior leadership getting WFH exceptions while talking to us about the rational for going back to the office. Just STFU we are sick of hearing the rules for thee but not for me. Senior leadership should get their butts into the office and deal with the chaos too. They are peddling the message about how energized they are because they are protected and don’t have to come into the office.

@af you don't get to management by admitting mistakes. You look for scapegoats and craft your story.

They will wait it out and see who quits. In the meantime they'll track more strictly, dock bonus and find new ways to terminate people they can point to as out of compliance. So even if enough people don't quit initially these measures and poor working conditoins will increase the number of people who voluntarily quit. .So they can dial up and down the BS as needed...but the one thing they will never admit they were wrong. I doubt they will losen up or at least any time soon. The only positive i can see in the foreseeable future is perhaps more seating once they lease more space, but i don't expect them loosening up in any other ways or getting back to something close to pre-covid.

We will have to put up with it and be recruited to be “site champions” aka biggest a55ki55er5 so that we get the checkmark for participation. There won’t be any lenience. Maybe they will reduce headcount but the downside is that we still have to work here if we don’t self select.

Cherry flavor coffee in the caf indicates to me they want worst possible working conditions to reduce headcount.
