Thread regarding IBM layoffs

PIP info needed

When we’re on a PIP, is it necessary to put in the effort to meet the goals, or is it not worth it? Should we just do the bare minimum and leave it at that?

IBM is so F'd up. They have even corrupted PIPs and use them like an addicted alcoholic. Such an F'ing game that hurts you physically and mentally.

I hope everyone who was-is-will be on IBM PIP reads this and stops asking...will I be all right...can I beat it...etc.

When IBM puts you on a PIP you are DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get out on your own terms and file for unemployment DAY 1!

Now in my case my kiss ars "mgr" (just an obedient old hound dog) came to me and apologized and said he and his 2nd line have to PIP people every qtr. In my case I was always doing good in sales BUT this qtr we both knew I had a $1,800,000 hardware deal that was in the bank with PO coming. So they both pretty much told me they were gaming the system with me to keep the 3rd line happy by PIPing me for about 2 weeks until the PO came in and then BO-M I was a good boy again and off the naughty list.

That was it and I decided then and there I was retiring on my terms. Reminds me very much when I left IBM after 19 years after Henchman G Man Gerstner came in and fired well over 100,000 over 18 months AND stole the pension. Many with 10 years+ were bo-m slammed to the worse cash balance plan and those of us vested in the old original pension plan had them cut by 50% or more. He was a horrible man like Alvind but Alvind seems to try to hide his arrogance and anger while G Man thought he was a tough guy and liked to publicly belittle and beat down people.

ONCE AND FOR ALL. PIP AT IBM MEANS "PLAN IT PERFECTLY" AND GET OUT OF DODGE.

@a4 in that case which seems to be more common these days. Document and save everything you can and store in a safe place you can access later on if you are let go. Also get everything you manager asks for in writing (ask for it) and if they say no record your meetings and save those. Even covertly record them. Cover your a-s. And build you case.

@a4 I wonder how much switching orgs help. If you are marked low performer two years in a row you get fired . If they have to pick one they may pick one new to the team especially if layoffs are coming

FLM here (software), It depends. If you were put on PIP, out of the blue, after good, productive years and positive feedback , then you are done; your manager was given a target to reduce the headcount (so your performance does not matter). if this came after follow ups and conversations over time, and you see merit to the feedback, MAYBE there is a genuine intention to give you a chance. Either way , use any time on Pip or after it (assuming you survive), to look for alternatives. PIP survivors are often targeted again unless they switch orgs. Good luck.

I was on PIP, I decided to set my priorities:
1- find a job outside of IBM
2- manage the PIP event with the goal to extend the "work" at IBM until finding an alternative.
3- Lucky to find a position outside of IBM before, the PIP became a "push out the door".
Funny story, manager contacted offering the position back. Thanks, but no thanks ....

Sadly it’s not worth it

Your time is better spent finding a better job and completely ignoring those goals

"When we’re on a PIP, is it necessary to put in the effort to meet the goals"

Too late for that.

"or is it not worth it?"

Correct.

"Should we just do the bare minimum and leave it at that?"

Bare minimum if you have to. Otherwise, less.
