OPEN LETTER: Immediate Action Required from HR and the COO Regarding CAO Leadership

As a long time WF employee and working in CAO for past two years, I have never witnessed so much workplace dysfunction and nepotism. I felt the need to urgently bring to your attention a severe and accelerating crisis within the Chief Administrative Office (CAO), led by Chief Administrative Officer Executive (EE).

The CAO organization is experiencing an unacceptable moral decay and operational drain, directly caused by the volatile and autocratic leadership style of its executive. What was once a high-performing division is now defined by a hostile work environment, blatant nepotism, and a systematic erosion of trust. Senior leadership intervention is no longer just recommended, it is immediately necessary to halt the departure of our top talent and protect the institution.

Key Issues Requiring Immediate HR and COO Action

Systemic Nepotism and Incompetence: Individuals with pre-existing personal relationships with the CAO are consistently fast-tracked into senior positions despite a demonstrable lack of competence or qualification. Qualified internal candidates are routinely bypassed in favor of personal acquaintances, undermining meritocracy and operational integrity. Some of these folks are located in UK and not qualified to run a program at a local credit union.

Volatile and Toxic Work Environment: The CAO repeatedly exhibits disrespectful, abrupt, and hostile behavior toward staff. This high-stress atmosphere creates a culture of fear where employees are discouraged from raising legitimate concerns or offering constructive feedback.

Severe Talent Drain: High-performing, long-tenured employees are leaving Wells Fargo in alarming numbers specifically to escape this volatile management. The constant loss of critical institutional knowledge poses a direct operational and strategic risk to the enterprise.Poor decisions are being made.

Required Actions:
To restore integrity, morale, and productivity within the Chief Administrative Office, we call on Executive Leadership and Human Resources to take the following steps:
Independent Leadership Review: Initiate an immediate, anonymous 360-degree review and climate assessment of the CAO organization, conducted by a neutral third party or dedicated HR task force, to evaluate leadership behavior and psychological safety.
Audit of Recent Hiring and Promotion Practices: Conduct a thorough audit of all lateral hires, promotions, and senior appointments made within the CAO division over the past 12 to 18 months to ensure compliance with Wells Fargo’s equal opportunity, merit-based hiring standards and anti-nepotism policies.
COO Governance Intervention: We request that the COO's office establish direct oversight metrics for CAO attrition, employee feedback, and organizational management until stability and professional standards are restored.
Wells Fargo cannot afford to lose talented, dedicated professionals due to unchecked personal misconduct at the executive level. We urge HR and COO leadership to act swiftly to protect our people and our organization.

Its interesting, I walk into local branches and am greeted by smiling, seemingly happy bankers who just want to know how they can help me. How could Jon Q Public ever know that behind these smiles lies a corrupt, devious, and completely immoral leadership that is driving good employees away in droves?
Until Jon Q Public is impacted, it will not change.

Sounds like CAO is exactly what Charlie wants it to be. It's cute that you think anything different.

Feel bad for the next group of interns that join this horrible company. They get baited in with the cult-like “rah rah” events, but after 6 months the mask drops and they realize that WF is a toxic dump run by narcissists that hate US employees.

Such a terrible place to work

If you think this is just CAO you are wrong. Our LOB in tech is exactly like this too. They hired a bunch of people when BE came on that are dismantling stuff without anything in its place. If it’s as bad as you say then skip the internal and keep notes so you can be a whistleblower. That’s what I’m doing. When they have another big f up that is public I have the receipts Senator.

COO is the one ordering CAO to do all this stupid S, so he's not going to be our savior. COO is essentially little charlie. He views his job as purging legacy employees and reducing domestic headcount. To zero if at all possible. That's what drives every decision, and they really don't care if the plane crashes into the mountain or not. Performance is irrelevant. Future growth is irrelevant. Does it reduce domestic FTE? In that case it's a good idea. Does it increase or maintain FTE? In that case it's bad. It is that simple folks. Half of his org is already gone, now he's working on the other half. It's a matter of time, for all of us. Plan accordingly.

Our CEO and CAO after reading this post: “good it’s finally working!!”

Everything that OP is alleging is happening everywhere in the company, not just COO, but COO might just be the most toxic. No letter is going to save this horrible place.

Leadership despises the US workers that keep stuff running.

I just hope karma actually is real because I despise this place as much as our CEO and CEO despise me as an employee

"moral decay"?

Look up the definition of "nepotism." That word doesnt mean what you think it means. Its pretty common in every company for people to hire those they've worked with. its called "networking"

Of these complaints, the only one that may get any attention is "disrespectful, abrupt, and hostile behavior toward staff."

You need documented examples of a hostile work environment. Even then, i doubt "hostile" means what you think it means.

My advice, this sounds hyperbolic and melodramatic. Sending this is good way to get laid off with no severance.

This is not unique to CAO, the entire bank is like this. This is the culture Charlie built, it's coming from the top down. I support what you've said but a letter isn't changing anything. I suspect we need a disaster on the scale of the accounts scandal to really change things. When the CEO is in weekly danger of getting hauled in front of congress to testify, then we might see some things changing.
