Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Job openings smh

Im genuinely curious how/why sooo many people are losing their jobs yet theres a sh!t ton of job openings at Centene right now?! Some as recent as 1 day ago for open positions!!! The company is apparently “struggling” but the solution is bring in AI but terminate hundreds of employees?!

@bz A year for whom exactly? I haven’t heard of anyone except a poster on here who had over 20 years of service get a year of severance pay. Mine wasn’t even 6 months and I have been here just shy of 10 years.

@ah Take a full year severance or stay and still be potentially let go? There were no guarantees provided for anyone that did not apply to be safe from Rif. Period

@bg Agree! I am one that never intended to leave my amazing team. We really had no option for a safety net so I applied and got accepted. I know my worth and what I bring. It’s just sad to know how you can be so good at a position but still have zero options

@bd Just because Centene said that VSP was for employees who already wanted to leave does not make it true. Centene is doing what they do best. Trying to make themselves look good & trying to make it appear that employees have a choice. In reality, we had 2 choices. Take the VSP with extra benefits or don't take it & get let go with nothing extra. Centene made the choice for us by letting us know in writing (and on video) that there would be further reductions in staff post-VSP. Many of us had NO intention of leaving our jobs prior to this fiasco.

Some people that left were being paid too much money for the role they were in. Letting go of employees that didn't want to be there allows the company to hire new workforce at a lower paycheck. It's all about business strategies here.

@b4 yeah thats not even remotely true, I make 60k a year, you're telling me that they're going to hire three people at 20k a year.....not happening

@b2 Centene explicitly said the VSP were for people who wanted to leave. They even sent a follow up email ensuring people knew that and suggested if anyone who had applied, but wanted to stay, that they should go back into the system and decline the VSP offer. Then they even extended the deadline since it came just before a holiday weekend.

It would be messed up if they offered VSP then turned around and denied the people that requested it.

@ah who said I wanted to stay? Comprehension skills matter & you insufferables lack it!!!! I was clearly agreeing with the original poster about the current open positions. That’s it.

from what I can see its letting people go and brining in people at a low pay scale.....they can hire 3 people for the price of one seasoned employee who has been there for years.

@aa Centene could have declined the VSP application. They didn't necessarily have to let this employee go.

@ah good grief this person isn't saying anything about wanting to stay! It's the moral of the fact!

@av not necessarily

@as So, if someone receives a separation date of 9/4, does that confirm the role is being permanently eliminated? I know someone else on our team received the same separation date as you, and our team is already pretty small.

There is still a job to do. Maybe less in some areas and more in others. That is the unfortunate reality.

it all has to do with what is needed for future state. I applied for the VSP, knowing the risk of being ineligible for applying for internal roles if it was accepted.

my separation date is 9/4. I had a feeling my role would be eliminated or they would replace me and pay someone less. it is what it is. I will take my talents elsewhere.

@ah If a company needed/wanted a person to continue filling those now backfilled roles, why did they even offer them VSP?

I know to save money and pay someone less to do the same job. So, basically throwing away a bunch of built up acumen, to do what exactly? Basically to do what is tantamount to pinching pennies. If you basically “downgrade” the experience of staff by letting the more experienced (more expensive) staff go, it doesn’t make the company stronger and better…just richer.

A leader confirmed to me that they are backfilling some of the vsp positions at lower cost. This is why you see the job postings.

@a7 if you wanted to stay why did you take VSP?

by

Post ID: @ah+1kz8v16tf

@a7 Well they can't keep you because you told them you wanted to leave via the VSP.

But hopefully since the department has openings that means the others in your department won't be laid off. Even if their role is being eliminated, hopefully they can move into the open positions being advertised.

What positions are considered essential?

I was wondering the exact same thing! My VSP was accepted, and my last day is 9/4. What’s confusing is that my department has several openings posted for the exact same position we’re leaving. It makes me wonder… if those roles still need to be filled, why not just keep us? The whole situation feels really odd.

@OP Unfortunately, that's the direction many companies are heading with AI. Whether we like it or not, it's becoming a bigger part of how businesses operate. Some positions are likely essential and will remain, while others may come back later, potentially with different pay or benefits. At this point, it's hard to know for sure. For now, it's really just a waiting game to see how everything unfolds.
