Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Promotions totally rigged at the bank.

Look at people are getting promoted, first of all they don't make it public, most of them are not at all competent.

When promotions are blocked by mandate rather than merit, what is the retention strategy for high performers? At some point, "be patient" stops being a career plan.

@214

The Dilbert Principle in action. Hiring driven by incompetence means direct reports never outshine the master, there's always a plausible scapegoat below you, labor is cheaper, they depend on you more as their labor market options are less, and it's much easier to identify incompetence in the hiring pool than competence.

Managers promote those which are no threat to outshine the manager, the talent, expertise and ability to build and develop a significant presence is hidden, buried or eventually run off to a competitive organization, such that a middle level of incompetence is in place and their ability to manage work is dwarfed by their inability to manage people.

@1dc There was a grade change along with the title change.

@1cz I know it sounds shocking, but I promise you that this is not false information. The disparity between rates seems largely based on business lines. As I stated before, it is most important that fairness be at the forefront. If one group can offer ten percent, then all groups should do likewise.

@1kv not true, this like everything else at the bank depends on your team. My coworker who is remote was just promoted to a G15, I'm a G14 and am over midpoint but still got a 6 percent merit increase. It really depends on org unfortunately.

@1df bingo…a few years ago. The comp philosophy was drastically different a few years ago than it is now.

@1cz not sure if this is BS, a few years ago I went from a 13 to a 14 and got a increase of 13 percent.

@1c0 so you got an AVP without a grade change? Anyone between a 13 and 15 is by default an AVP now.

@1c0 BS! No team has a baseline merit increase of 10%. Even a promotion comes with 5-7%. Stop spreading false information.

@11c To be clear, I was definitely promoted to AVP, not just a defacto grade change. More importantly, good work should be rewarded monetarily regardless of department or title. It is unfathomable that there are teams who receive two percent merit increases while other teams have ten percent as the baseline for their merit increases. Fairness matters.

@zx you weren't promoted to AVP, you were promoted to a 13-15, and the title just came with it. I'm old enough to be from when they were merit based and there was literally no benefit from it. I went from nothing, to AVP, to VP all at the same grade.

@aw It's definitely not worthless. When I was promoted to AVP, my salary went up $15K and put me in six figures. Sometimes hard work pays off. Sometimes it doesn't.

@aa you must not feel good about yourself.

No growth for talent in the bank, it's evident, crying over here doesn't change anything.

@aw those titles are now linked to grades, so jumping from office to AVP means you got a 13. They're no longer merit based, and while they don't mean anything, they do indicate what grade you are. If you see someone jump, they got a bump out of it. 13-15 is AVP, VP I believe is 16 & 17, SVP is 18+

My long history at the bank revealed to me whoever keep getting promoted will lose to the layoff algorithm each and every time...

@OP What do you mean by promotion? Ate you talking about going from, for example, Officer to Assistant Vice President? Worthless promotion

Is there even a promotion cycle anymore? Does anyone know when these happen?

@OP Three things to do to not be m promoted at here, be part of the gossip group, always bi--h or constantly bee negative. Those personality traits do get discussed between groups in bank and employees become non promotable without being aware of it. Two cents for a 20 year vet

If you want to get promoted, may I suggest learning how to use words and punctuation properly?

That might help your case even if just a little bit, because your post basically doesn't make sense.

It's also REALLY funny to me that someone will complain about the incompetence of others who get promoted while still choosing to write this, and hit "post" with gusto. I guess I can respect being an id--t with your whole chest.

Lame. Don’t sh-t on others for progressing in their careers. If you want something, go get it. This is such a loser mentality. Don’t be a loser.

That’s not relevant to this site. It’s also too vague and written horribly. If you aren’t getting promotion opportunities maybe you’re the problem.
