Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Experience

I see an uptick in Retirements, mostly 25 to 35 years experience each. Seems like many are being replaced by first or second year BTC staff performing the job remotely.

Dependence on less experienced, less competent persons working remotely, using AI, seems like a recipe for disaster.

What are examples of disasters, or potential disasters, that you see due to this trend?

I hear the logic but who cares how old you are when you’re producing. Aren’t the folks who run this place over 50?

In my area they are targeting the 50+ year old range with NSI because they do not want to upset the younger FLS.

Of course this is encouraging the older employees to run their numbers and leave as soon as they hit 55. (Why would you want to retain years of knowledge) It’s not that they did anything wrong. It’s just someone had to be there.

There is no AI program that knows what a 30+ year old field/console operator knows.

As an added bonus to this insanity…..the younger “soon to be supervisor” see how their coworkers are being treated and refuse to step up to management from wage.

Best of luck in the next hurricane when you have someone with 5 years of experience on the board and support from Malaysia.

AI draws on publications. So garbage in and garbage out.

Even before AI, there were those on the fast track that were assigned to roles they have little experience in. The good ones are humble and willing to learn/ take advice from those with experience. But the bad ones are arrogant and scammers …basically copied vendors or direct report/colleagues work and pass it on as their own. I had managers who told me fake it until I make it. Or even ones who tried to pressure me to promote their bad ideas. XOM have some of the worst managers in my 30+ years across several companies. Poor decisions have been disastrous for people’s careers and/or result in poor financial results.

AI generated work without screening by an experienced professional could be high risk.

I have encountered many EM employees that knew nearly nothing about the subject in their job title. Get a Manager of Widgets to review Widget AI documents in EM does not mean that anyone with Widget knowledge has reviewed that AI documents.
