Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IRS Group Life 5500 numbers

2024 group life = 52,279
2025 group life = 50,354

Difference = 1,925

Note you must also account for added USA Hashicorp employees at approx 1000

Difference totals 2,925 Or approx 5.5% of USA workforce

IBM is constantly acquiring new "employees" through acquisitions, massively increasing its debt. Given the huge numbers cut every year, this is like pouring water into the top of a very leaky bucket - and everyone pretends the bucket is half full when in reality it has already lost 50% of its volume. "It's not leaking - look it is half full!"

This is the real reason IBM only speaks to RAs as a proportion of total worldwide population, to hide how depleted its US numbers are. But hey keep refilling the funnel so let's pretend that Arvind hasn't already laid off nearly half the US population since 2022.

@aa really helpful data thank you. Which of us have the guts to post this on LinkedIn for 1,300,000,000 users (2,600,000,000) eyeballs? 95% of people have no idea the damage IBM has been doing since Gerstner came in 4-12-93 chasing cheap labor.

What happened to the disastrous plan tripling the hiring of new grads? Isn’t there a company wide hiring freeze?

Not sure where they're sourcing their data, but it was just updated in July 2026. So if it can be trusted at least to a decent degree of confidence, then the total amount of world-wide employees is 290,081 as of the end of 1Q26. By far the largest portion are in India with 115.1K. In second place is the United States with 59.2K. So in percentages, ~40% of the total are in India and ~20% are in the U.S.
Will have to watch this site for an update on the total for 2Q26.

IBM is very quickly approaching getting bought lock stock and barrel due to the free cash flow for the “enterprise” side of the house and being wholly absorbed. Once absorbed, if you vendors the commodity work, and sold/partnered out everything but enterprise, the numbers are compelling

@ab wow if this is true and these numbers are accurate we are no longer an American company. Really the USA government should not be trusting us with sensitive work or projects.
