When I started here, I was always willing to jump in and help when someone needed coverage. I figured taking on extra work would show that I was dependable and committed. Instead, those temporary tasks slowly became part of my regular workload, with nothing taken off my plate. I've definitely stopped volunteering as much.

I left 3M 2 years ago but something I wish I learned from my older lab mate when I was there - dont work too hard. Just hard enough to get your work done. If you work too hard, people will get used to it and expect it, and you will most definitely WILL NOT get an exceeds expectations on your annual review because the expectation is that you will already go above and beyond.
I unfortunately did not listen to them and tried to go above and behond only to get a meets expectations every year on my review. When I became disillusioned and started to dial back how much I was doing, I was threatened with write ups, because the above and beyond became the expectation. I learned my lesson and am working way less hard in my new position and trying to just keep my nose down and do my work, but not too hard
