Thread regarding CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield layoffs

Good Luck Remote Warriors!

Everyone complaining about CareFirst while threatening to quit, yet never following through, and claiming they can find a comparable remote job for the same pay elsewhere is simply blowing smoke.

Good luck to all of you, you're going to need it.

@dk I see.. so that means anyone hired after covid in office mandates may likely have received this special clause. Consider yourself fortunate, they are less likely to forgo giving you severance in the event they consider letting you go (if they do), due to lawsuits. On the flip side, even those who do have a clause, due to DEI, if someone is able to work remotely and the other is not, that is a potential legal issue because the workforce arrangement is no longer 'equal', and it may 'exclude' certain people. Since CF DEI heavy company, they must now also drink this kool aid.

@dj personally, I relocated and that was done thru a chain of approvals with HR being the final step (mgr, director then VP) I never agreed to anything and in writing with the approvals it states specifically that my job does not require me to be in office. It actually specifically states CF would pay my expenses if I did need to travel back for any reason for work. I would assume that would be considered a new ‘contract’ and I would receive unemployment

@bm There's a clause in the remote work agreement that states "if you are called into the office and do not return, you voluntarily quit". This was done on purpose so when RTA would be enabled the quit clause exempts you from getting unemployment or any type of severance because you "quit". This is the next phase of "downsizing", which was planned a few years back to save the company from having to pay for severances moving forward (because the tech debt is overcoming the operational expense and its rapidly increasing month over month)

So, is CF planning to enforce a return-to-office policy? If so, how will this apply to associates who were hired as remote employees or currently live outside the DMV area? Will there be exceptions or different expectations for employees who are not within a reasonable commuting distance? It would also be helpful to understand whether relocation would be expected and how the company plans to handle associates whose positions have historically been fully remote.

@OP All the resignations that have occurred over the last couple of weeks. Clearly you never worked anywhere other than CareFirst. Please someone pass them the Kool aid

@ad eliminate based on performance would help. We have 1 person who shows yellow more than a ducks bill and 100% isn’t doing even the minimum. Not even trying to pretend they are. I was told that tanks to HR she’s pretty much un-fireable. And not because they’re any value, it’s because they fit certain demographics that HR protects. Convenient to shake things up before OE so there’s an excuse why it’s a mess and we have even less enrollment coming thru. The public has been feeling the aftermath for months now

@ad I think most are are waiting for layoffs. I’ll take some unemployment, it’ll go great with all the money spent paying off VSP etc. I think you’re missing the entire point though here…most of love what we do. Most of us used to love the company and didn’t mind riding out the storm here and there. What nobody likes is the complete unknown this company has now. You may find it assuming but a lot of actually put a lot of loyalty, time, energy and effort into to keeping things moving. Newer associates have no idea what a good company this was to work for before BP came along.
