@bw I’m so sorry. I’m in the same boat also laid off from Centene and due in September. 😭 Have you gotten any information about short-term disability? I’m wondering if we’re able to open a claim in September while our coverage is still active, would the claim continue even after our employment/benefits end? I’ve been paying into STD this whole time and was counting on it for maternity leave, so I’m trying to figure out if there’s any possibility of still using it.

I’m being laid off at almost 7 months pregnant, and I genuinely don’t know what I’m supposed to do.
I’ve already met my insurance deductible for the year. I’ve been paying into short-term disability expecting that protection to be there when I have my baby. Now I’m losing my job, my health insurance and those benefits right before delivery.
I have medical bills I’m already struggling to afford, a toddler to take care of, and now I’m trying to find another job while visibly pregnant and knowing I’ll need maternity leave within a few months. The reality of trying to get hired in this position is terrifying.
After everything employees have given this company, Centene’s answer for me was four weeks of severance.
I understand layoffs are business decisions, but there are real human beings and families on the other side of them. I’m scared about how I’m going to pay our bills, afford healthcare and provide for my family. My mental health has taken a serious hit from all of this.
I never imagined I would be facing unemployment this late in my pregnancy. Four weeks of severance does very little to soften the reality of losing my income, insurance and benefits at one of the most financially and medically vulnerable times of my life.
There has been very little compassion in this process, and I’m devastated.
